I am in the US as well. There is a jeweler in a mall by my house that does it same day (he resized my husband wedding band in about 30 minutes).
The last ring I personally had serviced, I had a gem replaced, the white gold on the band fixed, the ring cleaned and resized, I had it back in 3 days. If i had just gotten the ring resized I would have had it back next day.
When you get your ring resized, find out how they do it. Some jewelers cut the metal and sear it back together. This is not the best method. There is a machine that some jewelers have (at least int he US) that doesn't require cutting the metal for resizing.

wow they have all told us that there will be cutting involved. They told us that this wouldn't devalue the ring but I'm very interested in this other method. ..

I noticed that you live in Australia. I'm not sure if its the same there as it is here in America. The last time I took a ring to get sized, it took about 4 weeks for me to get it back.

Woah! We took it and they said it was on average- a week and a half but they could have it done as early as 5 working days.

i think it depends on how much needs to be done. because i know some jewlers will stretch a ring it it just needs to go up like an 1/8 of a size, but i just bought a ring from walmart and it took them 3 weeks to get it resized because it had to go up 2 whole sizes.

Ask the jeweler. It depends on how busy they are and how complicated the ring is. I have a very intricate ring that would take some serious effort to resize. But really, it can be done in a day, but it depends on the ring, and how busy the jeweler is. Before you drop it off, ask for when you can pick it up.

I think this really depends on the company that you purchased it from. I hear that for some companies, you will need to take it to the shop and would have to wait a week before getting it back. Apparently there are companies who might be willing to get this done for you within a day. I think it's best to call the shop you purchased it from and enquire about the details.
