Females as Friends

I've been thinking a lot about situations I've been in where I meet a new potential female friend through a mutual male friend. Without really trying, both of the women tend to be in a struggle to maintain queen of the mountain status with the male friend. It seems like there's a lot of competition between women in these sorts of situations, whether conscious or subconscious, and it stands in the way, at least for me, of developing a true friendship. Do you find it hard to become friends with other females? Why do you think that is? And what have you done to successfully start and nurture friendships with your male friends' other female friends?
