How do you keep directions in Jakarta?

At the first time I came to Jakarta, I was attracted by this one: the popular directions (young)people used to mentions were "left" and "right". Up to now it's just the same. When I try to descript a certain location to someone, she/he just suggests me to use those two rather than "north", "south", "east", and "west". Then I have question if they haven't ever seen the sunrise and the sunset in Jakarta! What do you think? Is it meaningful or not?

Umm... in a big city such as Jakarta, maybe the inhabitants think it's much easier to tell an address by referring left or right. Because the streets are too complicated and not all of the inhabitants there know the name of those street. Also, I think it's a way more communicative using that kind of direction.
