Do the need of a passport is important?

I have always considered my passport to be important. I do travel to other countries a few times a year, so the passport is used quite often. I could travel to some European countries without a passport, but outside of that it becomes necessary.
I consider my passport to be my only true proof of identity, mainly due to the security required in obtaining one. Even my birth certificate is not real proof of identity because it does not have a photograph etcetera.

I think everyone from every country should have a passport.
It is the most important document you can own and tells who you are and where you belong.
A Passport if a very patriotic thing and is valuable.
