Why do people start smoking cigarettes?

I have always wondered why people smoke. Is it because of the buzz or peer presure when younger? I've tried smoking when I was younger, but never did it enough to get addicted. And only did it because of peer presure, I regret doing it now. But why would people smoke cigarettes or any kind of drugs if they know it is going to harm them? Is it a form of long-term suicide? What do you think, or why do you smoke?
