The Role of the Book

What is the role of books in your life? I heard that a lot of Americans don't like reading because of all the "work" required. I've also heard that people think movies will supplant books and that books will eventually become obsolete. I hope NOT, but I was just thinking about that, because as a writer, I want to publish some novels and I would hate for there to not be a market for it. What do you all think?

I would say that books play the role of relaxation. I like to read when im feeling stressed out and i just need some peace and quiet, so i will go to my bed, turn my phone off, and read a book for like 30 minutes and that will relax me. I have never seen it as work unless it was required like in school. Its sad that the world is going at such a busy space that they see reading as "work" though.

Oh I so wish I could do that my problum is that I compleatly lose track of time when reading a good book! I can start one at night then the next thing I know I've finished it and have to be up in an hour! So I end up with no sleep and being compleatly useless for the rest of the day...

Writers and artisit will always have a place in this world because even movies as well as video games need the creative juices to further themselves. I see the trend we have started by going back into history to play out our media but even this will require new blood and new stories. It is unfortunately true that most of the people I meet do not like to read and would rather watch a movie. I find this a sad turn of events since books were such a large part of my life and my development. However, thanks to fairy tales I also have an unrealistic attachement to finding a knight in shining armor so there is credit to be given to both veiws.

You know what Ray Bradbury says, we don't have to burn books to make society worthless. People just have to stop reading them. Books contain all the knowledge in our world. They also teach skills like respect and empathy (we can put ourselves in place of the character). Unlike television, they give us thinking time. We can pause to consider and go back and reread and savor the words.
I am a high school English teacher, and books have made all the difference in my life. Books have changed my world, my perspective, and given me something to do that I love. My greatest fear is going blind, only because I love to read. I love the physical act of looking at the text on the page.
Books can and do change your life. I only hope I can inspire my students to read throughout their lives and always be open to new information.

There will always be people who want to read books--so long as there are writers, anyway. A book for me is entertainment and enlightenment. I can't escape into a movie or the internet the same way I can into a book. A book is far more personal, and almost always far more moving. This is not to say that movies don't have their place, because they certainly do.
I interned briefly with a publishing company, and what I do know is that hardcover books are going the way of to dodo (a shame, too, as they are often more beautiful than paperbacks), but there is still a very active need for books. Publishers are doing very well.

Movies can never replace books, there is no way that a screen show can compete with the imagination of the mind. I use to read books that movies were based on, after
i had seen the movie, and the book was always so much better. I had also read books before a movie was made for it and I would get so excited to see the preview of a movie based on the book that I so loved, but it never failed the the movie would make me disappointed, they could never quite recreate the magic and emotions that I felt from reading a good book. A movie would have to be at least 5hrs long to even come close to giving a book justice! I guess that is why "Lord of The Rings" was so long! Anyway, I don't believe reading is in any danger of becoming out of style.

You dont need to worry, because according to me, the market for books can never extinguish! Books are one of the most basic and reliable source of information. In case of novels, they act as your companion, as they can be carried anywhere with you, which cant be done with movies or the Intenet-the latest information bank. Books play an inevitable role in one's life. When you read bedtime stories to your kids, you "read" to them, and that cant be done by showing them movies. Books improve our reading skills and work a lot in improving our vocabulary. A dictionary after all is a book! Also books can be as detailed as you want while unfortunetly movies have their own limitations. It cant go for more than 3 hours at the max. Whereas a book can be as fat as you want it to be. And above all, books and movies are two completely different media with different objectives and styles of presenting things! Take for example The Da Vince Code-for most people the movie is JUST a part or a brief of the book, whereas some feel the movie is very well made. A movie cant be made on everything which can be written in a book, though both are medium to tell stories, the genres vary significantly. I am student of both so can tell you, what a movie can do a book cannot, but what a book can do a movie cannot either! Best luck for your novel, you have a crowd waiting for you! Do let me know when its out, I would like to read it! :)

I love books but sometimes I don't have time of reading a new one. Life's gets so busy recently and I have no time for any activities which are not that important. Im just setting things in priorities.

I think movies and books fill totally different roles in my life, so I can't imagine one supplanting the other.
Books, for me, have always been about giving my imagination a workout. I imagine what the places the author is talking about look like, what it would be like to be or know the characters, what other possibilities could have come of the situation described. I suppose I'm a bit of nerd, but I spent a lot of time as a child with my head stuck in a book. I've always loved both fiction and non-fiction, and on just about any subject.
I think as long as there are novels coming out, there will be people to read them. While there are movies, video games, sports, and internet to compete for attention, children are still reading like crazy, as well as adults. I know I read less as an adult than I did as a child, but that still equates to at least a book a week, and sometimes two or three.

Keeep up the good work! I think you'll have success if you don't sell in America since the citizens there don't read that much as you say. As for me I read from time to time when I find an interesting book. I don't think movies can teach in the same way as the books, because the stories may be the same (we see a lot of examples of films made from books), but books give the variety of vocabulary and grammar, especially for foreigners who read another language. I've leart quickly English thanks to the British and American writers, not thanks to the films. No offense but in my opinion most of the American films are not that educational and I find them useless. Don't give up writing.

Honestly,I don't like to read books, because they are too long to read, and I don't have patience.I almost don't buy books, because I think the students' books are enough. If I buy a book,I won't spend time in reading it.But if the books borrow from others,I will read it.It sounds so strange, but it is true. But there are so many people love to read books,it must be a market for you novels.

I don't think movies will ever totaly suplant books as they use more imagination from the reader. so you can picture the charaters and setting in a way that can be muchmore compelling, then someone elses interpretation of the story which is what you get in films.
Also you can be a lot more discripitive for example including charaters thoughts etc. and generally end up with a more in depth story if it's done well.

Well, I am an American and I don't believe that anything will ever take the place of reading. I don't think movies will ever replace books because they are two different things. Books allow you to use your own imagination, whereas movies show you everything the way the filmmaker wants you to see it.

really the book plays a major in my part of life because the feelings that cannot be said are can be written on a paper, and we can have a sharing.
But todays time is not pretty good, as everyone is writting what ever the nonsence they required.so be sure that the PERFECT sketch of the whole should be there then only it will reach the correct place in the GLOBE.
ok THERE is nothing wrong if ur story is correct which should have the perfect END or starting.
best of luck or send a copy to me i wil read and give response to u.bye

In my life i think that books are only one which improves our knowledge and style of our life. but americans they concentrate on their work too much so that so many don't like the books . as a writer don't be depressed friend one or the other day your novels will be purchased.
