MTV & VH1.... Should Children be Watching This? And What Happened to the Music??

Music - What happened to the Music?

When I was growing up MTV was all about music and music videos. Now MTV is all about all these different shows, most of them have nothing to do with music at all. Once I watched a few of them I questioned, do parents still allow children to watch this channel? I personally don't think I would want my future children viewing shows like I Love New York, White Rapper Show, and Next. I remember a big fuss about Bevis and Butthead, but come on they were at least cartoons. The things they are showing on these programs is alot worse that Bevis and Butthead (not that I would let kids watch that either). What do you think about the programing on these "music" channels? Do you/Would you let your children watch them? Am I the only one sick of only getting to see music videos at 4am?

i'm sick of all the shows too-i barely watch either channel anymore.they seem to force only the "new popular" videos too-so if you don't care for that particular type of music, you're screwed. fuse tv (canada) was a great alternative, but my cable company removed it.something about competion to mtv/vh-1 (*cough* payoff *cough* )

Are those channels still on? I guess so from you discussion. My children don't watch either of those. I can't tell you the last time I even watched music videos. I think it was when Friday night videos was on. Why do you watch vidios at 4am? My children are 7,9 and 11 and thank goodness they are all still listening to disney cds and some of the kids bop ones.

I do not have children, so I don't have any such responsibility. But if I did, they would be most disappointed in me because most of the time I do not have a television set. I have one in storage I take out every once in a while to see what trash the networks are giving us. Usually I find better programs on more local independent stations, and PBS (Public Broadcasting System, for those outside the US). Though I may be interested in looking at the History Channel ... I spent six years of my childhood in Europe, and remember there were only a few channels available. But most of what my family watched, my step-father being in the US Army at the time, was the Armed Forces Network, which was one channel. The last tour there All In The Family was the big hit. Yes, I did have a television and cable in the 80s, paid by everyone living in the house, and remember the videos. My favorite were with animation, especially the ground breaking computer animation of Dire Straight's Money for Nothing (!) But all by myself, I do not need it. It's mostly all trash, and I don't need to be paying money to have them bring it to my home. Just get a simple monitor with a DVD player. That is all one needs these days for quality programming.

I am not a fan of these channels though I watch them occasionally. And you are right - sometimes when I switched to the channel, I was disappointed to find no music being played. I get the channels are just being commercialised too much. Why, if you ask me, I would just switch to another channel if no music is playing. I don't think my children, if I have any, would be that much a fan of these channels till they are older. They would probably go for e.g. cartoon network. :P

Well I pose this question because a friend of mine found her daughters(10,9,8 years old) watching Next. She didn't know what it was until she sat down and actually watched it, she was shocked. She does not allow them to watch MTV anymore.

Most of what is now on MTV - minus TRL - is not aimed at a younger age group. The majority of the shows are aimed at the 15+ crowd. Many of the shows you mention come on later in the evenings when younger kids should not be awake. I know MTV has music on in the morning when I get up (6:30am), in the afternoon when I get off of work and at night. VH1 also has quite a bit of music videos on. I find that I like the videos on VH1 since they don't play rap music.

I am also sick of no videos. I don't usually watch MTV but I used to watch CMT and VH1. It is a shame you can't see them hardly anymore.

*gasp* You mean MTV still shows music videos?? I had no idea. Honestly, though... I don't understand how they can still call themselves "Music Television" when most of the shows they air have nothing to do with music. It's really irritating, too. Even MTV2 which used to show tons of music videos is now airing different programs that have nothing to do with music. Well, it was last I checked anyway. As for the whole kids watching the shows issue, I don't have any kids, but I wouldn't let my nieces and nephews watch 'em. Of course, they're all 7 years old or younger.

Well I agree with you on the MTV. They call themselves Musical Television but that's what they least give! Now it just fixed "reality" shows. Next? Exposed? Parental Control? All these are fixed and stupid. I hate MTV. I feel like slapping the owner for being such an idiot.

Because my taste in music tends to be so non-video worthy (mostly classical music and film scores, with Billy Joel and The Beatles being my favorite pop/rock artists), I didn't watch much MTV or VH-1 when they DID have "music" in their content. When both Viacom channels had tons of videos and few other programs, we didn't have cable television in my house, and when we did finally get connected, I barely ever watched anything but CNN and a few channels along the lines of A&E, Discovery, and HBO/Cinemax. The only time I purposely watched MTV was to see the "world premiere" of John Williams' "Duel of the Fates" video about a week or so before the May 1999 release of Star Wars Episode I. By then, MTV had moved away from Music Television and gotten into such shows as Beavis and Butthead and The Real World. Should children be watching this? No, not in my opinion. I don't think there's anything wrong with adults watching The Real World or whatever, but kids....nah. Not exactly enlightening or edifying stuff for them.

I actually do not let my kids watch MTV or VH1. A lot of music videos contains violence and graphic scenes which I think is not suitable for young kids.

Yeah the music just gradually dwindled. It's pretty sad. But I was allowed to watch Beavis and Butthead when I was young and look how I turned out... huhhuhhuh.

I totally agree with you. I think there is too much programing and too little actual videos. I think the programing is aimed at late teens and adults. I like some of the programing myself (like some of the reality shows & Punk'd). But I honestly don't watch many vidoes these days either because I can't get into a lot of the newer music. I usually just watch the new videos from my favorite artists on the internet.

I am going to "date" myself here, but I remember when MTV launched with the very first video..."Video Killed The Radio Star" I used to love MTV and watching videos. Ever since they started Real World and Road Rules, all they do is play crappy (excuse my language) shows. MTV stands for MUSIC Television.. not dumb show TV. I do remember the stink over Beavis & Butthead, but now they just show Jacka@@ and shows that could REALLY cause damage to minors. Go figure.
