one thing that i learned about stretchmarks is to look at the genetics in your family and see if your mother or grandmother got bad stretchmarks from pregnancy! in my family we all have very elastic skin so none of us really ended up with stretchmarks from pregnancy. while i was pregnant i did use pure coco butter to prevent them, however they never really formed, so i only used it on occassion. id say anything that helps make your skin more elastic and moist would help.

I'm lucky that I don't have any strech marks after birth. During my pregnancy, I try not to scratch my tummy with my finger nails, believe me....it can be really itchy. What I did just slowly scrubbed it with towel/ cloth and my husband kind enough put a gel from a brand called "biotherm" on my tummy eveytime I can't stand the itch. It sooth and reduced itchy. Some people will try to use menthol powder or cream or lotion but for me this biotherm product helped alot. I didn't have any strech mark on my tummy after birth at all.

I agree I think it has to do with genetics, my mother doesn't have any stretch marks and I didn't get any either. I gained 50 pounds (I know GASP) with both of my kids, I used the cocoa butter all the time, I put it on a few times every day, and tried not to scratch my belly...I would put more lotion on and just rub =)

I agree with everyone else about cocoa butter being a good preventative. Although prevention is easier than removal, we came up with a lotion that really decreased stretch marks for people. It would be too big of a financial stretch to get it to market commercially, but I do talk about it in my book (listed in my profile).
