Why did you choose an avatar instead of an actual picture of yourself?

Do people choose an avatar instead of an actual picture of themselves because they want to be anonymous or is it because people are so judgemental at first glance? Maybe it's a persons alter ego or the person they are truely inside themselves just the shell look different? I had a picture of my car for awhile and I didn't have very many viewers or responses, so I put a actual picture of myself and it had created more views not responses. (Not that I have a ton, just more.)
Why did you choose your avatar and not a picture?

well, my avatar is marge and homer simpson because me and my boyfriend share this account. :) sometimes he logs in and responds to discussions and sometimes, its me who logs in and answers the discussions. sometimes, we answer posts together. we love to watch the simpsons and we think they are reaaly funny, that's why marge and homer simpson is our avatar. :)

I chose mine becuase it was the oe I was using on all the forums I visit at the time. Plus it is something i made myself and was quite proud of it.
