I have heard this new news outbreak. Honestly it comes as no surprise. The ingredients in out pets food are often covered up my phrases of bone meal and the such. What these actually are, unlike the true bone meal edible for humans, is the remains of animals that have already passed. These foods are full of byproducts and chemicals. Rule of thumb... if you won't eat it, why should your pet?? Think about it. Would you eat a burger that was sitting on the counter for 6 hours? Or milk that was left out? Of course not, so why should we expect our precious pets to eat something we leave out for them for hours on end? We think it "doesn't go bad"... but figure this as well... if it doesn't go bad, then it wasn't good in the first place. I suggest home made recipes to feel your pampered pet. I have been doing this for a few years after losing my baby to liver failure which was "untraceable". Is it now time to boycott the big companies? Our pets are our kids and it's time we all start treating them that way! I hope that everyone's pets are doing well and that we have caught this in enough time to prevent things from happening. Best wishes to all.

Now that I have calmed down a bit :) I have been online looking for dog food recipes. I went with the brand they were eating because it is made for tiny dogs. I feel kind of betrayed by this whole thing and am really focused on finding good nutritional recipes.

I've done some research on this, and found that the only possible pathogen in wheat that carries the symptom described is Fusarium. Apparently the effect on animals is cumulative. So owners feeding the affected food over a few days twice a day may find their pets sick. Look for vomiting as the first symptom. I am as angered by this as you are. I have noted that the FDA spokesperson has mentioned the "the grain may not be responsible, but it may be a substance in the grain". This immediately signals to me that it may be Fusarium Mycotoxins. In this case, heat sterilization would not have been effective, and the grain and gluten suppliers/manufacturers should be responsible for using affected grain. Let's see what they have to say when they've done the testing - that should be in the news this coming week. Check my other posting updates on this subject. I will be keeping a close eye on all info coming from the FDA. I have made cat food for my ailing cat years ago. It was kind of fun! Using boiled chicken and rice as well as vitamin gravy, I concocted a stiff goo of chicken that my cat loved. It was a little messy while grinding it, but it was worth it. Within a week my cat showed signs of improvement. It was also cheaper in the long run than commercially canned food.

I've been feeding my dogs IAMS for years, and I was really upset about it when my husband called me at work last night and told me about it. When I came home from work, I immediately got on line and looked it up, checking the numbers against the food I have and sure enough, it's the contaminated crap! Now I am worried about my dogs.

Thank you so much for posting this discussion! I heard there was a dog food and treats recall, but I never got to hear what brands. You know how CNN sometimes says, "Come up..." and then it never came up! So, thanks again for the link. :) I am happy to say that none of the foods or treats are on the list of recall. I sure hope that your dogs are ok!!!!!

The FDA announced this week that they can't be sure none of the tainted wheat gluten got into human food. This is very scary because wheat gluten is in a lot of our food. Also please beware that Menu foods pushed the recall dates back to November. Alpo has a brand that contains Soy instead of wheat gluten, this is what I am feeding my dogs now. It is called Alpo Chop House Originals, it comes in several flavors and my dogs love it. For now this is my plan, to totally avoid wheat gluten for them and myself.

Thanks for making everybody aware of that. I actually read about it the same day I needed to get some dog food and I'm glad I did.....because the brand I normally feed was on the list.So except for a upset tummy from switching dog food so suddenly my dog is okay.I don't even want to think about what could have happend if I didn't know about it before hand.

I feed my dog Ol Roy and my cat Special Kitty, which is store brand. They are not picky about their foods and like everything, and it doesn't matter either way to them. I would be devastated if something would happen and I think companies should pay more attention to what they put in their food!

I was watching TV the other day and I heard about it. But, it never can back and showed the story. Well, today my brother was flipping through channels and he stopped on a channel with a doggy. And, they talked about how the puppy was going to have both his kidneys removed and them put to sleep. This was because of the dog food recall. I checked the site and luckily we don't use any of the recalled foods. Thanks for posting this discussion, it was a lot of help. :D

I heard about this last night and some of the food I feed my dog is part of the recall. I'm taking it back this afternoon.

This is why people have to stop feeding their pets food that is readily available from the pet store! To begin with, these foods are FILLED with fillers that offer no nutrition whatsoever for your pet. If you feed your pet a high grade food, they don't eat as much and you know that they are getting a real meal every time they eat. Go to http://www.petfooddirect.com and you can go to the section that says "all natural food." I feed my dog Wellness, but there are tons of great foods avaiable. I always get nervous when I hear about any type of recall on anything, but when it could potentially directly involve you or your pet, it gets me really nervous. I hope that other pet owners are responsible enough to hear about this recall and stop feeding this terrible food to their pets! Thank you for posting this!

Thanks for the link. My dogs pet food is *not* on there, though there was a recall not too long ago for it in some states (luckily, CA was not one of them). Apparently the dog food company got on the ball and fixed the problem quickly. For those of you that are interested in understanding labels and other helpful info here is a link: http://www.doberdogs.com/menu.html I don't feed my dogs anything with artificial colors, flavors, BHT, or any of the other bad stuff. But with any dog food that you buy premade (whether it's bagged or canned) there is always that chance that there will be a recall on it.

oh my god this is terrible it shouldn't be aloud do you think they already know about this before selling the food and just see how long they can get away with it for? or do you beleive it is just a genuine mistake? I wouldn't be happy if i had been feeding any of that stuff to my dog i would have been darn right annoyed.
