I've lost my voice! Help!

I suddenly lost my voice, it started out like allergies, then just went straight for my vocal chords. I have been told that anti-biotics are not good for this. Any kind of home-remedy I can use to help this along? I have a bit of a cough now too.

This has happened to me 3 times this year. My allergies are on high. My Dr. suggested warm salt water gargles, honey & lemon tea (soothes it) and do not talk for a week. That was the hardest, course my kids loved it!

I bet your kids did love this. My mom believes in everything natural and herbal, so she has used the honey & lemon for bad coughs before, it does sound like it would work good for this too. I have used the cough drops before that have honey and lemon.

You can try gargling with salt water. If it's allergy related, you may have some post-nasal drip messing things up. It will go away on its own, though, probably in a day or two. Used to happen to me all the time with the season changes.

I have heard that salt is good for infection, maybe that is why salt gargling helps. This must be bothersome for you if it happens a lot. Mine just came on suddenly, I didn't really feel ill or anything, just my voicebox got scratchy, then bam, sounded funny when tried to talk. Thanks for sharing with me.

The good thing about myLot is that we can be heard without being vocal. I sympathize because I'm a gabby girl and it drives me bananas to not have a voice! I hope you've found some helpful hints for healing on that site. You may have noticed (in yellow~on the right) there is a whole list of A-Z home remedies to refer back to for other ailments. Thanks and Regards!

Go get a fresh pineapple. The naturally occurring enzyme, bromelain helps my throat problems. It works best if it is fresh. So sorry about your voice. I hope this is something that helps.

Pineapple is one of my favorites! I will defintely have to try this. I know cough medicine does not work, so I'm all for something natural. Thank you so much for sharing this with me.

What did you say? I can't hear you, could you please speak up? LOL Couldn't resist it :) Afraid everyone has already mentioned my "cures": salt water gargle, honey & lemon, don't talk... I had the same thing happen to me years back and my youngest also loved it - I did however get really good at yelling on paper. Worst part was while my voice was gone #2 son in AF called (he didn't get chance much then) and it was ok, youngest translated what I wrote (we were on 2 phones so I could hear what #2 was saying). Got ready to say good bye and the older son and I always say "I love you" before hanging up - #3 son was very uncomfortable with that. #2 waited a minute and said, "I heard you Mom I'm telling the doctor you talked" - I didn't really.

Oh my, that would be difficult. That was so sweet that your son translated for you, that will be one phone call neither of you forget. Thank you for your humor, it made me smile. You know what they say, laughter is the best medicine! Thanks for sharing with me :)
