What do people look for in a community site?

Community sites are sprouting up in dozens, you get an invitation for a new one almost everyday. Most of these are clones of orkut, not quite worth taking the trouble of even visiting the link. MyLot seemed different and is, not just due to the money involved, but the quality of discussion and regularity of responses. The money ensures that.
These community sites are different, but how would you like it if orkut starts inbuilt chat. like the way gmail does? i've wondered why they ask you to download GTalk to chat. They did it in GMail, they can do it in orkut. I Don't think it could be an issue of traffic or space constraints.. Google doesn't have any.
Or how about personalized pages. I dont mean themes as in Hi5, but personalized in the sense that you have the abiltiy to even arrange the things in the page your way.
I've felt that MyLot is quite slow as compared to orkut. Google can easily add all the speed and bandwidth orkut needs. On the other hand, myLot has less than 1,00,000 users . Wonder what will happen once that number doubles.

There are a few things I look for in a community or social networking site.
1) Since I am a writer, I look for any and all chances to write and show off my writing (preferably for money). That is why I love MySpace. It's the home of my only blog, though it doesn't make me any money, but MySpace's owners (FOX) didn't like what i was saying, so they cancelled my account. But I opened a new one, so check it out.
2) Speed is very important, and that is where MySpace lacks big time. They are just not equipped to deal with the extreme number of users that it has. I haven't see myLot going too slow yet.
3) Personalized pages, again like MySpace, is really important. A chance to show off who you are and what goes on inside your head.
4) Things like chat rooms, groups, and message boards are always helpful bonuses, also.
