Accuracy of film (Movie Spoiler, skip subject if you haven't seen movie)

I know it's only a movie, and I love the message about Liberty and freedom and honor and glory, but was anybody bothered by the inaccuracies of the film? I guess it bothers me because many people I talk to believe it is historically accurate. Even considering artistic and editorial license so the film would be more enjoyable, I had problems with some of the accuracy and hypocritical messages. First, although it referred to Persians as Asians, it depicted Perisan royalty as African. I guess it was to contrast Xerxes with the manly Spartans, but Xerxes was a bit too flamboyant for a warrior/god/king. In their meeting, I thought Xerxes was going to make a pass at Leonidis. And in another scene to depict contrast, though I know the Persia army had a lot of slaves, Persia had a great warrior army and I thought the movie depicted them as cowardly. The Perisans are also shown as ogres and monsters and an hedonistic uncivilized society, but it is the Saprtans who brag that they kill their "weak looking" babies by abandoning them. As far as the story, the movie makes it sound as if the Spartans went at it alone, with some help from the Thebians on the way. From what I know, the Athenians had to talk the Spartans into joining the war. It was the Athenians who talked about a unified effort to defeat the Persians. The movie had Leonidis disobeying the council. He kind of did, but the council had already voted in favor of sending the Spartan army, but not before the end of the festival. As a compromise, Leonidis left Sparta early with his personal bodyguards. I know every movie changes stuff around on true stories. Am I overreacting? Were these omissions and depictions part of artistic license to make the story more dramatic? Or should the movie have tried to be a bit more accurate? Did it bother anybody else besides me? (Iranian government need not respond - I know you didn't like the film). Finally a confession, I don't know if my facts are true, it's just my recollection from 7th grade when we learned world history.

The movie is really an awesome movie, but no it is not an accurate account of what happen in history. The movie is a film adaptation of a graphic novel named 300 by Frank Miller, which itself is a fictionalized account of the Bettle of Thermopylae on 480 BC.
An alliance of Greek city states fought the invading Persion Empire army at the pass of Thermopylae. Yes they were vastly out numbered. Even so they manage to held back the Persion for three days in one of history's most famous last stands.
Yes the army was lead by Spartans and their King Leonidas I, and yes they were 300 of them. But Thespians and other Greek allies did offered help which makes their forces roughly about 6000. While the Persian Army about 100,000 to 500,000.
Look up Battle of Thermopylae for more info. Yes I'm sort of a history nut :)

Sometimes it doesn't bother me, like in the Aviator - it didn't bother me that the portrayal of Howard Hughes was kinder than it could have been because we were supposed to root for him. I guess it bothers me in this movie because so many people I talk to think outside the monsters and ogres, that this is a totally true story, and I think the story was even more simplified than it had to have been.

Alright, I will not say too much. Considering this is my favorite movie to date. But YES! Xerxes was WAY to girly lol. I mean in history you read about him as a man of power and vision! and in this.... yeeeeeah. lol. good point.

I know the movie was based on the comic book, but Xerxes was way off.

stories are usually altered a little for films...just consider harry potter like when they cut some stuff from the book or something...it can't be exactly the same...it's good to watch the movie and it's better if you knew the story beforehand as well cause you'll be able to compare the details.
