My husband is trying to get a job as an over the road truck driver and I keep reading about trouble in marriages with truck drivers. But I also know truck drivers that have been married for several years. What are some of the issues that arise? What can we do to make the time away not hurt our marriage?

You can talk to each other regularly via cell phones or laptops.
You can make the best of the time you have together.
You can surprise each other with random gifts when he gets back in from the road.
Don't worry. (You don't want to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.)
Trust.
Be truly happy and appreciative when he comes home. (Home and you and the family, should be something he always wants to come home to--remind him every now and then--that is somehow treat to something great when he comes home.
Be independent.
That's about all I can think of for now. My sister's husband is a trucker who goes out all over the country. They don't have a perfect marriage, but it's far from bad. They talk on the cell phone at least once a day--in the least every other day. They might send emails back and forth. They make the most of the time they have together. And my sister, with three little ones, is generally too busy to be worried or without things to do.

Thank you very much for responding. You have given me very good suggestions. We have found a cell phone company that offers unlimited minutes and we can pay for unlimited roaming. I am sure we will talk on the phone a few times a day. He is already thinking of things that he can do to ease the time away on our 4 year old.
