Last year, as a candidate for United States Congress in the 24th congressional district of New York State, Democrat Michael Arcuri declared his support for the Republican Military Commissions Act, saying that if he were a member of Congress, he would have voted for the new law.
That's troubling to many given that the Military Commissions Act removes many of the basic freedoms that Americans have taken for granted. The Military Commissions Act does the following:
- Fair trials get replaced with kangaroo courts
- The Geneva Conventions are no longer enforced
- Torture becomes legal
- There is no more right to a speedy trial
- President Bush and other top officials are given legal amnesty for war crimes
- Habeas corpus is taken away
Supporters of Congressman Arcuri say that he was right to support the Military Commissions Act, because he needed to win the election.
What do you think? Does trying to win an election justify supporting this infamous law?
