movies i always wondered, are they a piece of art or just another business venture? as any other art like painting or music why is films not followed as an art form? is the purpose of making a film is just to make huge money?
when a painter starts his painting he doesnt think in terms of selling it for huge profit, but when a film is made lot of thought is given on the commerce part. do u feel this commercial angle in film making takes away the art aspect of it? will we make much better films if we worked as an artist?

movies is no doubt an art in itself.but people here are seeing it as a major jackpot where they can spawn money by buying other ideas and stamping thier ow names over it.yes its true people who have money buty thier talent with thier money and write thier names over cover pages which breaks up hopes of many young and talented youths in the country.Even tough they are trying to emerge out with thier shear talent they are not given sufficient chance to showcase thier talent.
Its pity t say that movies these days have have become less known for thier art but more for thier mpney spawning tool for the rich

it depends upon the mentality of the people..Different people think different things..hence some think movie as an art,and some take it as business..the people who take commercial films always consider movie as a business..but some directors take art films and they consider movie as an art...but we people consider movie as an entertainment which shows some difference from our routine work..

ravi i feel any movie which is a form of art can also be entertaining too. Art can entertain u too. a good sensible comedy can be a good work of art. i think art in films need not be only boring, preachy or tragic. this is a misconception. like good literature covers drama, humour, satire, mystery etc... everything, likewise a good cinema can be dealt with any aspect of life. u see charlie chaplin made 'the great dictator' or 'modern times', beautiful cinema to see, full entertainment but very sensibly done. we miss that today. sad!

Some says that business could be an art too. The art of making money. Then again there is no rule that says you can't make profit from your art, be it movies, music, painting or other forms of art

no iam not against making money from art, its just that i feel money should never overshadow art. ideas should not be killed under the burden of making money thru them. films should be made like a true painter making his painting, no worry of market. if u make an awesome painting u will be rich anyways.

ya making a movie is all about bussiness and we ppl fall into it as a prey. If it was an art, each and every movie would have been produced in an artistic way, the way how the artist wants to produce it, not the way people wasnt to see it. Its all a bussiness to make money to get name and fame.

ya though it will continue, but it is we audience who should watch wat we want, promote wat we like. if we see crap then crap will get promoted. so try to see good cinema. because any art grows not only with its creator but also the ones who watch & appreciate it. an art & an artist both require a good audience to get rightfully promoted. if there r no audience, no fans to follow, then any art or its artist will die away. so audience plays a greater role in sustaining any art form. it is they who give it a shape & structure, not the artist.

It depends what type of film you are talking about. If you mean the multi- million dollar summer blockbuster, that type of film is made for the huge money the studios. But there are still films that are made because the producer and director have vision and want to tell a good story. It is made even if it doesn't make any big money. Usually it is made by an independant film maker who had a vision. Just like an artist has a vision of his painting. Some of them do find an audience and make money, some don't.Movies are art and there are still artist that make film.

the sad part is, i have seen many commited filmmakers start their carreers very passionetely, but as success get them they start getting influenced by the market environment around & slowly start making films which is dictated by lots of things around.
where does the passion for cinema vanish? where does this insecurity creeps in? why cant he remain fearless as he was & make films he wants?

they are part art and require extreme skill. they are a piece of art because they are beautiful entertainment, like a painting or a picture. movies potray as if you are there at the scene or place, like a picture which is, an art. they are also a business in a way because they do this for money, like how famous painters like diego rivera, and pablo picasso did for money.

i agree famous painters like picasso earned lot of money thru art. but if u look closely picaso never ran after money, he just painted wat he wanted. it was people who ran after him for his paintings. that's wat i wanna emphasis do ur job & money , success will follow automatically.
picasso will never paint something just because people say its going to sell. he will always work thru his heart & mind. the day he doesnt follow himself he will get destroyed!

that is a very interesting topic you choose
and i do appreciate you opened it
i think that now days movies or more of a business then an art..when you look at the amount of movies that are done you will see that most of them are targetd to people to go to the movies and pay for them so they will make alote of money.
there are still good artists that do not make movies just for the money..and it is good.
i think that art: thaeter, movies and music are more and more becoming a buiness then a way to express the things..
and it is a pitty..don't you think so?

thanx buddy. its good to see like-minded people like u. i sincerely hope things will change. this change i feel can only be brought by the audience. we should start an initiative to see such films & promote them too. Also if we start rejecting the crap big budget films things will certainly change.

Movies is art to a select few and a business for a lot many more. The reason for this is the artists, directors, producers and all others have to make a living out of the movie. Only if they do so, they will live to make another movie. For some of the well to do actors, it becomes a question of art as they move on in their careers.
Cheers!

i agree that u have to survive & so make a living in ur life. even filmmakers r no exceptions. but it feels sad when big producers run after money so badly that they tend to make formula films, manupalate market & even supress new filmmakers. that is what gives this industry a bad name & poor films for people!

I think the truth behind it is the film industry would stop thinking so much like a business or more like an art, if they paid the actors and actresses less money. The problem is in order to hit the "Big Screen" they think they need the "Big Names" and the names costs a lot of money.
The lower budget movies don't come out as well, graphics wise and a lot of times actors wise either however they are more like art!

yes buddy ur right. i feel they should make just good films from their heart & stop thinking wat sells. its always the comman excuse they give that it is wat the audience want & demand. its just an excuse i feel. audience will only see & react to wat u show, its never the other way round.
