I need help here or second opinions. I have calculated the amount of calories I need to eat to lose a pound a week. I often go over this amount of calories in one day by a few hundred, but I exercise twice as much as I need to almost every day. Basically I am burning more calories then I am taking in, but I'm still not losing weight. I am stuck at the last 8-10 pounds before I reach my ideal weight. Do you think it's because my body is bored of doing aerobics and speed walking on my treadmill? I'v been doing this kind of exercise for 20 years. Maybe it has quit working?

I agree with what several others have said...you need to switch it up. Over time, your body adapts to the exercises you do. As that happens, the exercise becomes less effective at burning calories. Try a different cardio class, and/or a different cardio machine. Better yet, get outside and walk on soft ground somewhere, or go hiking. Walking on soft ground or unstable surfaces (like sand) works a whole bunch of new muscles in your legs and hips.
The last 10 pounds are the hardest for everyone. Part of this is psychological. For some people, it can be really hard to get their minds wrapped around being the person they've been wanting to be for so long. If you've been overweight for a long time, your weight may be part of your identity...part of your self-concept. Everything you know about who you are is consistent with being overweight. As you close in on your goal weight, you have to actually realize that you have become a different person, and get to know who that person is.
Lastly, I would recommend shifting your relationship to those last 10 pounds. The truth is, if you've managed to get this far, you've produced something really extraordinary, and you should be very proud of yourself. You should see it as a huge victory. You have to acknowledge that victory, and in doing so, complete the game you've been playing. Game over. I won. Then, start a new game for the last 10 pounds. When you do that, it becomes evident pretty quickly that all the actions you took that allowed you to win the old game are now inadequate to win the new game. You're playing at a higher level. This new game will require a level of thinking that the old game didn't. It will also require a whole new level of action.

Fantastic thoughts here! I like the idea about walking on soft ground - it does change the way the muscles are used. I will even do some of my walking backwards (small hills are the best). I can really tell the difference in my glutes!
I have copied your thoughts on "the last 10 pounds" and added it to my motivational folder. Even though I have more than 10 pounds to go - the psycological part of losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle is really at the forefront right now.
THANKS!
Ellen

I agree with others about changing your exercise routine. Try something you've never done before. I find this happens to me at times too. I'll reach a plateau and can't seem to lose any more weight. I give myself a break for a day, then the next day, I try an exercise I've either never done, or haven't done in a while. That seems to jump start my losing again.
Good luck!

i think it's about time you change your work out..it's important that you do a variety of exercises so that every part of your body is taken cared of. you could walk for the first week, then go biking the next week, then yoga or pilates maybe the following week, etc. You have so many options. Good luck on you!

Hi Anakata2007,
When you mention that you are excercising more every day is clear that the reason you are not losing weight is because you gain muscle. and muscle is heavier than fat. You might even put on a little bit. But Please do not discourage because of that. It's normal when you are watching your diet and do as much as excercise as you do.
To make you feel better you can start measuring your body I'm sure you'll find you have lost good amount of inch/ cm all around your body...Good luck and all the best...

Try switching up what you do. Try doing some interval training where you might jog for 5 minutes walk for 5 minutes run for 5 minutes. Second off maybe you should try changing up what you eat and try and put some variety in your daily diet. No it hasnt quit working muscles wanna be taught different things. Thats why you shouldnt just do the same excercises over and over. Mix them up on a daily basis. Give this a go around and maybe it will help you!!

Here's another vote for changing up your exercise routine. I read an article in "Prevention" magazine stating that even the simple act of changing the time of day of your workout can kick the metabolism. I am giving that a try.
In the past, when I hit a plateau - I have taken in the same amount of calories for a week but varied them between the days and the times of day. For instance, say you average 1200 calories a day over a week. One day have 1500, one day 800, one day 1000, one day 1200 etc. On the days that I am having the lower calories, I find that chewing a FiberChoice table before I eat helps with a feeling of fullness. Then, also vary the times of day that you eat. If you normally have a small breakfast - have most of your calories at breakfast one day. Do you normally have 3 regular meals a day - have 6 mini-meals for a couple of days.
The point is to get your metabolism jacked up and out of the rut. You can return to 'the norm' for a week after a couple of weeks. Then, repeat the change up weeks.
Congratulations on your succes so far - here's to that last 10 pounds!

Well personally My weight has been up and down for the past 3 years. I find that my body gets bored of routines and before i know it i'm actually eating enough to sustain my increased and usual exercise routine. There are certain stuff you can do to sort of jump start or aid your weight loss process. For example: Adding a little lemon to your bottle of water can help to cleanse your liver while quenching you thirst, which helps your body to metobolise stored fat and get rid of waste more quickly.
I never recommend crash diets or those crazy no carb fads, while i must admit it works, but take it from me you will feel and see the effects as soon as you start eating normally.

Your body can get used to the excercise, especially if it is the same all the time, you do have to vary what you do. How far do you walk on your treadmill? If you were out walking then the minimum recomended number of steps daily is 10,000 for weight loss and good health.
If you are counting calories then it is better to try not to go over the number you have calculated as it is not that easy to burn off the calories as it is to eat them.
Also if you were burning more then you where taking in you would lose weight, unless you have a problem with carbohydrates and in that case try the atkins diet for a few weeks as I think that would do the trick, but if you do decide to do atkins make sure you get your fibre each day from something like fibre gel, that you can get from the chemist, otherwise you can run into problems.
