I am goimg away to work for the summer/fall, and I'm going to use this time to catch up on my reading. I've decided that it would probably make the most sense to go to a used book store and see if I can trade in my old books. I have no problem with buying used books, as long as they're in decent condition. I think it makes the most sense in this situation because I'm trying to save money. Which do you prefer to do, buy used books or new ones?

Buying books itself is a good habit. Let it be a new or old one, reading is very important. Some books may be very old, their new editions may not be available, in that case, we have to go in only for the old books. Some people may very much interested to read the books, if they are new. Some may be interested in the content, whom can read the books in any state, old or new

Personally I'm more interested in content. I'll read anything

I love reading and often used to go to the used book store or book exchange. There are not many around any more. I also go to the library very often. If I see a good book in a book store I'll buy that too. No will power when it comes to books. Enjoy your holidays.

I spend a lot of time at the library as well. There are a few books that I'll decide I want to buy after I've read them, and it doesn't matter if it's new or used.

lately, my husband and i have been buying used books. we prefer this because we are able to save some money (you know how books can be expensive these days) and at the same time, we are able to read the novels that we want.
we also buy used childrens' books for our 21-month old daughter. you see, she really can't read yet but she insists on pretending to read the books by herself. the books always end up torn. so we thought it best to give her used books instead. that way, even if she (unintentionally) tears off the pages, we won't really feel that bad (as compared to how we would feel if it was a new book).

Books are books, and if they've been read before, well so what? Far more of my books are secondhand than new, probably because I've spent a lot more of my time in secondhand bookshops over the years - and worked beside one, which was fatal.
At the end of the day, do you buy books to read, or because they look good on the shelves. I know what my preference is!

I've never understood people who buy books and don't read them.

I like both used and new books. There is nothing like a new book however I do like the lower price tags that come with used books. Used books also come with some character. I like getting my used books at garage sales, half.com, and used book stores.

I forgot about half.com for books. I usually look at amazon or abebooks. You're right, used books do have character. You can tell how much they were loved, or not. Thanks for the post!

How can they not give you knowledge? They're the exact same as a new book, except read by someone else before.

My BF had an used book store couple of years ago (LOL!) I haven't anything against used books until they are clean and in decant condition, like you said. I found out, there are people who are buying books just to fill their shelves and never actually read them. Some books I got from used book store were never opened.

Why would you buy books and not read them? Seems like a waste of money. Thanks for your opinion.

well i have heaps of friends that buy used books. and i dont see anything wrong with it especially when you dont have the money to spend on new ones. especially if they do the same job as old books.
i havent got used books before as im not much of a book reader and lately the textbooks i need they have been just been given to me.

Hands down the used books route! I don't often "return" books for credit, so the used book route is the most cost effective. I'm not the reader, my husband is. He can read 3-4 books a day if he had them laying around!

I buy used books more often than the brand new ones. It's much cheaper. I used to buy these hard bound books. It's a compilations of best seller novels. The readers digest condense books are one of my collections. I buy those used books when I have nothing to do.

I used to buy a lot of books at garage sales. I tend to stay away from the smelly ones or the ones without the cover. It really depends on how many books I have at home that I haven't read. If there are only a few, then I will buy used books. I do prefer the hardbacks, the stay nicer longer.
I haven't traded any of mine. I tend to give them to friends. There are books that I will never part from. I am a bookworm, I do love my reading.
If I buy new hardbacks, I won't lend them out. They just never come back in the same condition.

When I was in university, my class mate and I used to buy used book a lot. It was expensive enough to pay for our education so better save some money on books and we did need a lot of books. We loved to spend hours and hours in a book market and have a good bargained on some books (some even like new condition). For us wasn't so important that we bought used books, because what's inside the books (contents) more important.
Up till today, I still enjoy the used book market. You'll never know what you will find, just like a treasure hunt. Last time, I found an good condition the first original edition of donald duck for my nephew and it even cost only 25 cent. And my nephew just jumped up and down with the gift.

I definatelly prefer to buy new books but some times they are really expencive. In that case I buy used ones, the truth is it does not make any difference to me (if we suppose that the book is on a good condition)
But, I have never though of sell my books. When I think I do not need them any more I am giving them away instead of selling them, but from now on that you gave me the idea, I will think of sell them (I have a lot and this could be profitable...)
