Motivation at Work

How do you stay motivated at work? I have a job with a varying amount of downtime based on customer call volume. On days that I have a lot of downtime between calls it is hard to stay focused on work related tasks. We have Internet access and it is very easy to get distracted and surf around. Although I have not been reprimanded for it I do know it is not what my supervisor would like for me to be doing. He does not want to assign us tasks but rather have us develop our own projects. I do this from time to time but it is difficult to find enough to keep me busy on a daily basis. Anyone else have similar experiences?
