Eat your Crusts

I was very tempted today to throw away the crusts from my bread, as I had eaten sufficient. I remembered my childhood days when I was always encouraged to eat my crusts "waste not, want not" and I put them aside and finished them off when I was hungry again.
Do you eat your crusts, do you feed them to the ducks?
What do you do?

Hmm, Gissi doesn't share and I have seen the growling and hissing if he thinks there is a single chance he might have to. I still think you should eat some of the crusts to strengthen your jaw bones. But then that is what I think, Gissi will take notice of that, I don't think!

I'll fix you. Why not try making a nice bread and butter pudding, which will make the crusts soft, and don't say you have no sultanas, as if you remind me I shall bring some.
I make that 30 all, next?

i hated bread crusts.. untill my aunt came up with an idea.. ,She just took the crusts from all the bread tht we had for the past two days and she made UPMA(south indian not so favourite breakfast) with them.
Every1 in my house loves UPMA or BREAD UPMA as my aunt calls it..
the crusts have given the UPMA tht thing tht was missing in making it a great breakfast.. it just adds tht extra crisp.. mmmm..

Well that was a wonderful solution and made everyone happy, your Aunt is a very clever lady. What is the recipe for the UPMA?

I eat mine, I make my own bread so I can choose how crusty it is. I could never understand why people think it's posh to cut the crusts off. My kids eat crust sometimes, but I never coment either way. Egg and cress on brown bread need a crust, lol.
As a child I was made to eat them and I remember fighting my mum for the round side of the sandwich, lol.

You make your own bread, yummy! I make it sometimes, when I feel well enough, and I have to admit it comes out all right, tastewise, but it is a rather odd shape.

Oh yes I remember saying this and also my mother saying that crusts make your hair curly, it that why my hair turned curly I don't think so. I do eat crusts sometimes but most of the time I leave them for my husband to eat as he loves the crusts.

Wow, what a partnership. I used to have a friend who would only eat egg yolk and his brother would only eat egg white, and their mother had a fine old game sorting out the whites and yolks for her boys lol.

Personally, I eat the crusts.. I love the ends of the bread.. especially homemade bread though.
My daughter absolutely refuses to eat the crust and if it's nice out I'll tell her to throw them on the porch for the birds but if it's not, I let her just throw them away. It's not worth fighting over with her, as long as she eats the sandwhich and the good stuff inside it I don't mind if she throws away the crust.

Oh yes, I totally agree. As long as a child is healthy it is never worth fighting over food. I think it just makes a child more picky in later years.
Shame though as she misses out on great taste, but maybe as her jaw gets stronger she will find that she will like crusts more.

I eat the crusts. Our upbringings condition us, and we continue with most of the teachings. I eat everything on my plate, even if I am full.

I totally agree it is best not to waste. Do you make your own meals, if so, have you tried smaller portions, as if you eat after you are full you can overload your digestive system and later in life that can cause you real problems.

I haven't ready anywhere that the crust has better nutrition, what I read was that the extra toughness of the crust helps digestion as it takes more time to chew etc. Hmmm food for thought there.

I remember those days too, and, years after I grew up and got married, my mother would save things in her refrigerator until they spoiled, because she believed so strongly that you shouldn't waste anything. I finally convinced her that feeding the birds outside her window wouldn't be wasting, so she developed a whole colony of crows by throwing her scraps out to them. She never tired of telling about the latest antics of her "birds" as they fought to see who would be in charge of the goodies that day.

That is a lovely story about your Mum. Do you have photos of that as well?
I must admit that I try very hard not to waste anything and try to cook smallish portions to limit the chances of waste.

Yes I eat the crust on my bread. When I was little my mom use to tell us to eat the crust cause it would make your hair curly. Not sure if it really worked, I do have wavy hair though, so who knows.

Well, it didn't work for me lol. My hair has always been straight, even when I tortured myself wearing rollers overnight. Now I am older I have it cut in a special way which gives an illusion of curl, but really it is still straight lol.

I eat the crusts, also I actually prefer those end pieces of bread.
I usually buy REALLY good bread. Iggy's made that day
or Baldwin Hill and I toast that
or fresh bagels
I think that waste not want not thing was good for depression times, now when there plenty, people take that too far sometimes, if the food is rotting throw it away, if its food ou don't like anyway, throw it away

I wouldn't eat rotting food but I must admit I do try very hard not to waste. I suppose old habits die hard, but when I was in school we were always being given horror stories about the amount we waste and how it would feed a whole village elsewhere, it really stuck with me.
I agree about good bread though. I use economy bread all through the month and at the end of each month I treat myself to a speciality bread.

The birds & dogs get the bread. The fruits & veggies get composted. The birds get baked (sterilized) eggshells as do the plants. I reuse/recycle everything I can even food for other critters. :)

Well done! It is fantastic that you waste so little. Thank you for the tip about eggshells. I didn't know that birds liked them and I shall try that on my three.

I like to eat the crust with my bread. If I don't feel like finishing the crust I will toast it or bake them until they are bread crumbs for baking.

If I don't eat all the crust for some reason I put a little spread on it and give it to my birds as a treat.
