I don't think anybody fully understand The Holy Trinity. You haven't said how old the child is, but you could try usind the shamrock like St Patrick did. There is just one stem and three leaves and this is like, there is Three Divine Persons in The One God, The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

All I can think of is the way it was explained to me as a child. The teacher usually took three stick matches and lit them to form one flame. Of course we were lectured not to play with matches at the same time. (We defintely did play with matches from time to time but NEVER in order to demonstrate the trinity so I don't think this little example ever actually encouraged playing with matches)

The Trinity is illustrated by the shamrock being three leaves that are actually parts of one leaf. As a child in our church we were taught with the illustration that your dad is 1. your dad, 2. Your grandma's son, and 3. Your uncle's brother. He is all three of these people, but he is just one person. I hope that helps.

Its quite simple realuy look at the following
to my child ------------I am mom
to my parents ----------I am child
to My spouse -----------I am wife
three distinct personalities but still me !
the trinity
the father
the son
the holy spirit
three distinct aspects But still one God !
the holy spirit

I am an outsider, so I won't come up with the language of priestsI am a poet and artist, hence I speak the the way I do.......So I'd like to present this metaphore: Not to be taken literally. We can only grasp this mystery through pictures, metaphores, I believe
God is LIKE unto the sun
Holy Spirit is LIKE unto Light coming from that sun
The Messenger of God, Jesus is LIKE unto a perfectly clean Mirror, showing the perfect disc of the sun
They all work in unity, forms a unit, yet they are separate
with different functions.
God stays in His Heaven. just like the sun
Spirit transmits illumination and love to heart, just like the suns light warms and shines on your body
Jesus gives out that illumination and love just like the mirror reflects light and illumination. The full disc of the sun,= Gods Perfections is shown in the that Holy Mirror.
Only that way God is seen. God doesn't become flesh.
"Spirit is spirit and flesh is flesh". Hence I believe that the Holy Spirit is not a person,or a personality, only it can be likened to lightrays and warmth.
This is my suggestion. Because very soon children can perceive symbolic language.
We are after all free to use the BOOK of Nature. Jesus did
I regard it as the third revelation of God,
First there is the Messenger, then the book,= the Bible and then Nature.

I love your symbolism, and your final comment about the revelations of God. I feel like I have learned something in this discussion.

I understand your dilemna because the concept of the trinity is hard enough for adults to understand let alone children. you could try explaining it but saying there is ONE god but that god has three personalities or parts - the father, the son and the holy spirit. God reveals himself to us through the different persoanlities. Just like when ur good thats one part of ur personality and when ur naughty thats a different part of ur persoanlity. i dont know if that helps but ultimately believe in the blessed trinity is a matter of faith and sometimes its best to tell children that its something u have to believe on faith. just like we believe in electricity even though we cant see it or explain it we know it exists. I hope that helps a little bit.

It simply like this example: you are a mom, a teacher by profession, and a tennis player-- but I still pointing to the same person. This is the same with the Holy Trinity: the Creator (God the Father), the Savior (Jesus Christ), and the Counselor (Holy Spirit) all are the same God. One Godhead in 3 different functions but one in purpose-- to redeem mankind from eternal destruction.
