Why do people choose to have tattoos of ugly things?

okay, I know ugly is subjective. I love tattoos. I have one and hope to have many more. but whenever I look through tattoo magazines, I see some that I can't understand people wanting to have done. people have things like evil looking demonic faces, tattoos to look like a zombie is clawing out of their flesh, even tattoos to make it look like their flesh was rotting and falling away and full of maggots. now why would someone want that on them forever? to me, a Tattoo is something that you want on your body because you find it beautiful. a piece of art you want to carry with you forever. a decoration to enhance and improve your appearence. so. what do people get out of these tattoos of things that actually aren't attractive to look at?

Well I'm goin to disagree here...I love body art of all sorts and though I PERSONALLY wouldnt get a devils face or zombie etc tat on my body since its not my thing...to others they have some sort of meaning...Example..there is someone here in MyLot who has tats along those lines...very nicely done too I might add...why? Cause if I'm not mistaken he's a huge horror flick fan or something along those lines so to HIM those are the perfect tats for him to have...my kids dad had a devils head with a naked chick lying on the devils tongue that I personally wouldnt have but on him it was perfect...so was his evil Jester and his spider and spider web.... too each his own and the fact is that nobody other than the one sporting the tat can say for sure WHY they chose that ya know...but it means something to THEM and thats all that matters..thats what body art is about...I couldnt give a flying f*** if ppl dont like my tats when all is said and done..I dont do them for anyone BUT ME....make sense

good answer there. I mean, that's just it. I don't object to tattoos I find unnatractive, just curious as to why. I'd rather see an unnatractive to me tattoo that the owner loves and has reason for than something picked off the wall for the sake of getting a tattoo (like my man had when we met. it had no meaning ot him whatsoever, beyond that he wanted to have a tattoo done. he's since had it covered with a very very beautiful phoenix, with so many beautiful colours in it.

You are SO RIGHT!!! Thanks for bringing it to light. I don't understand tattoos to be honest but if you are going to get one at least think about it and plan it out. We have to look at them too!

exactly. it's for no ones benefit but themselves (in most cases, if people get them for everyone elses benefit or perception of them, then they're silly) I'm not out to criticise them for their choice of tattoo, I'm just curious as to what makes people choose the things they do. I never think any less of someone for having that sort of tattoo, I just don't have a personal understanding of it.

I don't really understand either I think it's to look hard or scary but I'm probably wrong and everyone is gong to jump on me for saying it, lol. I have a dolhpin and a moon on my shoulderbald with my oldest sons name underneath and a butterfly on my tummy near my hip. I am still looking for something for my younger son, aht I want to keep forever, I'd like a bear but I havent found one yet and I'm not sure where to have it.

you see, I'd really like to hope it's not just to look hard or scary. I really hope there is more to it than that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, I like most off the fantasy ideas, dragons etc but others may not. I wouldn't like to put my lovers name on my body as it may be there longer than him, lol. I would lke to thinkwhatever image is put on our bodies has some significance to us as a person, but maybe it's just a case of I like taht one, or imagine your mums face wehn she sees this?

I asked one of my former colleagues why he has a lot of tattoos on his body. He said our body is the best canvass. I guess tattoos are permanent and when getting one we should be careful of what image we'd like. I just think having tattoos in our body looks messy and untidy and I'll never have one sooner or later. Besides, I think hospitals doesn't accept blood donations from those who have tattoos.

People tend to get tattoos because they mean something to them, regardless of whether or not you understand it. Meaning is subjective, beauty is subjective. The stuff that you care about doesn't necessarily mean anything to a different person. If you really want to know, why don't you ask them? That's about the only way you're going to ever really wrap your head around the issue.

I respect your understanding of that matter and also why you asked that question...but people tend to have different personalities...no two people are alike...so what I mean is for them ugly tattooes could mean stronger personality, masculinity, or even telling people that they are brave...hahaha...because some people especially the men class wants to somehow broadcast to their own class that they are fearless of those creepy creatures or ugly looking tattoes...but I think we just need to respect their own perception and last thing that I can say is... "Let us ask them why they have it?" What do you think??? :D

well exactly. I'm asking because I don't understand it myself, and I'm interested. at the end of the day, a lot of the best friends i've ever had are goths and metallers and people that some people think are scary. I've seen many weird and wonderful and not so wonderful tattoos, and love hearing about why people have what they have. my boyfriend used to have a rather rubbish tattoo. it was some kind of chinese symbol, which apparently meant language. it had no meaning for him, other than he'd wanted a tattoo and picked one that didn't look too painful out of the flash. recently he's had it covered with a really stunning, beautifully coloured phoenix, which covers nearly all of his upper arm. which is much better.

The tattoo may not be attractive to us but in their opinion it did look attractive or has some kind of meaning to them which I think is why they get those particular tattoos. Some people may choose pictures that are different and that will stand out and that is something that most people do not have on their body. There are a lot of people that like to be different and creative.

tattoo is something viewed by the people very differently. it is sometimes viewed as ugly and cometimes it appears to be a cool thing. it depends on the people seeing the tattoo. tattoos are art and it is something not to be abused for i have seen so many people in the movies wearing so many tattoos on their body that they have left no space for the natural skin, all, tattoos all over the body.. this one seems to be a very dirty look for me and i don't want things like that. its not that i judge them through their physical look but i just want a plain simple body, a neat one and a very presentable look that can please evrybody. it is okay to have a small detailed tattoo on your body, its just cute and its not too loud, just right as what art means, not too much, not too less.. just right

I know what you're saying there. there's lots of tattoos I want to have done, but I never want them to look crowded. I want each one as a stand alone peice of art, and none of them overshadowing another.

I know that some tattoos are a matter of culture. For example, there's a common Japanese theme of a wife who turns into a demon so you see a lot of scary looking masks. Also, tattoos are a statement, and maybe that sort of idea is something they want others to realize about themselves.

I have several tattoos and can say there was a reason for each. Everyone I know that has a tattoo or a few, has a different reason. Some of the more vivid tattoos, like the ones you mention, are usually to make a statement. I liken it to a person getting various parts of their face and body pierced. It's a certain look, a certain vibe, a certain statement they're after. Then again, I've also met people that got tats on the spur of the moment while a little looped on something and really wished they had picked something different too.

It beats me why some people feel they need to have tattoos that are gross.I guess they feel it looks good but what of when they get older thats when reality bites big time. I was badly burnt and have bad scarring as a result and for years i wouldnt go to the pool or beach I was self concsius of my scars but one day i got a tattoo put on my back and from then on i walked taller because yes people stared but not at my scars at my tattoo. Now I am older and yes Im not so proud of it now as its really ugly and I wish i had spent more time thinking what to get tattooed on my back

I personally have any tattoo on my body but I know a lot of friends who do. And yes some of their tattoos aren't really pretty but what I know is this...some people portray their lives or the way they had led their lives or how their lives had progressed through this tattoo...it's their to way to show to other people that this is what they have gone through...some would actually use this to show them how they really feel about themselves...I have a friend who has a tattoo of rotting flesh on them and I asked him why he had this done on his body when it doesn't really look good at all and he said that that was what he felt his life was a rotting flesh that no amount of good deed could actually make him feel that he's life has worth and so he feels that he's rotting inside him thus the tattoo...so you see some don't really have tattoos just to beautify their body but also to make some emphasis or to make a statement to the world about themselves...

Beauty is the eye of the beholder. The reasons for ugly tatoos could be varied. Maybe the shock factor would be one reason. But if the tat had a meaning behind that the wearer wants to project, that could be another reason.

I think the tattoos you find ugly are really nice to the person that gets them but I do agree some people do go over board and get some stupid a*s tattoos. I dont know hwy they do it since it last forever but they still do. "MORONS" Personally before getting mine I condsider everything from shrinking of the skin to stretching so Im happy it will always look close to what its suppose to.

Yes I know! Why would someone want a huge ugly drawing on their body forever? But i guess its ugly for us, but not for them. I dont understand too why they like it with the fact that its painful and looks unhygienic, but some people have tattoos for sentimental reasons.

people have their own different way of expressing their feelings.those people who have tattoos of ugly things just like that might think that those things which are ugly to us are beautiful to them.we can't blame them,

Tattoos reflect who you are, I have 2 tattoos, one on my ankle and one just below the navel, I got unicorn because I feel I'm just like it....difficult to capture. LOL Maybe they want demonic faces or evil creature attached to them because they want to have a bad boy personality in them. not at all a bad idea...
