which had been rejected by momma bear and has now been criticized by animal rights activists who say the zoo should have euthanised the cub.
Mother Nature has a system in place to ensure the survival of species in the wild~ survival of the fittest. Nine times out of ten if a mother rejects her young it is because she senses that there is a problem with it, whether it is a physical, internal, or mental deformity. By rejecting the single offspring she helps to ensure the survival of the rest of her young.
I firmly believe in not interfering with this system in the wild, but I feel it's a different case when it comes to animals in our care. We've taken on the responsibility of caring for and ensuring the safety of these animals. I don't see any harm in bottle feeding this cub and reintroducing him into the zoo. Even if Polar Bears were gregarious rather then solitary animals, if done properly, the cub could be reintroduced to other Polars. I can understand the concern if they were wanting to place him in the wild....he's not human shy and that would create a problem, but in a zoo?
Sometimes I think animal rights activists go a little too far.
