I'm taking my ABCTE (American Boards for Certification of Teachers' Excellence) Mathematics Exam on March 30, that is about 9 days from now. I'm really nervous because failing the exam would mean not getting a teaching job in the US this year, something that would really make me feel like a big failure. I've been trying to study really hard but it seems useless because I always get tired and fall off to sleep and when I'm not sleepy, my mind is sometimes blank or full of worries and fears of not passing the exam. My friend call it "Anxiety Attack", I call it, "My Way To Failure". Am I being too negative?

maple_kisses, don't be so hard on yourself. I think what you are struggling with is a case of math anxiety. I would know because I have a terrible time with math in spite of the fact that I am a 4.0 honors student. Part of the problem is that unlike say English which we use in varying degrees throughout the day whether we like it or not, math is something that tends to fade away over time because we do not use it. (Unless you are an engineer or scientist or hold another such career that uses math regularly.) For me, one of the first things I had to do is just calm my mind. The anxiety is what produces the fatigue and the blank mind. It is just an indicator that you are feeling overwhelmed. Luckily, there are a lot of websites on the topic of 'math anxiety' that have useful strategies that can help you break free from the paralysis that math can induce. I think you will find, if you haven't already, that if you just get 'unstuck' you will slowly, but steadily move towards being confident in your ability to handle math. If your foundation is shaky, I would also suggest doing a review of all of the basics i.e. factoring, fractions, orders of operation, etc. because if those things are not solid, then it is unlikely that you will be able to get your bearing with the more advanced concepts like polynomials, linear equations and the rest. I hope everything worked out for you.
