Reading Speed

Do you read quickly just to "finish the book" or do you read slowly for understanding and enjoyment of every word and angle and situation? For me, if it's for school, usually the former. If it's leisure, the latter.

The speed of my reading depends on my purpose. If my intention is to learn and study, I usually take the time to truly understand the material. I even go so far as to make sure I do not have any misunderstood word that would prevent me from totally mastering the information. If my intention is simply to be entertained, I usually read fast, which is my normal speed. If the novel is fastpaced and the plot is exciting, I'll be happily busy turning pages as I speed to the end of the book. If my intention is to enjoy the quality of writing, like literary pieces or poetry, then I savor the material by appreciatively reading each line. I would even go far as read some portions aloud in order to listen to the rhythm of the words. So for me, my speed depends on the material I'm reading.

I read quickly when I read, unless I'm reading a Chemistry book or something boring like that. When it's something "scholarly" then you just have to slow down to grasp the content. But I'm an English major so I read lots of novels and a good bit of poetry. If I'm reading something literary, i have one reading speed--fast. Not because I don't want to devote the time to it, but because that's just how I read. I was an only child and spent a lot of time with books and am a writer myself, so I don't need to read slow to comprehend.

I love reading books, but I read them cover to cover. My reading speed is quite fast, but I do enjoy every bit of it. I don't flip pages without reading them or peek ahead of where I am to find out the plot lines. However, once I get started with a book, I really can't put it down before finishing it. The last big reading that I did was Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, which is well over 900 pages. I completed it in two days straight. I took about six hours to complete Da Vinci Code, about four hours to complete Deception Point, a day to complete Fountainhead, a couple of hours to complete Animal Farm.... I love reading.

I can enjoy a book fully if I read through it fast. But sometimes I do like to take my time, other times I want to read a book fast so I can get on to the next book lol. If I dont understand a part in a book I will reread it until I get whats going on. Or if I really like a part then I will read it one more time. But sometimes when I'm reading a book and I get another book I cant wait to read I'll try and finish my current book to get to the next one. But the speed I read doesnt really effect whether or not I enjoy it or not.

I'm a slow reader. I envy those who can breeze through a book and retain what it says. When I try that it's like a train jumping off the tracks. Usually, reading a novel will touch off memories of similar things that happened to me, or some philosophical idea. I find myself continuing to read, but my mind is on my own ideas, so I have to go back and reconnect with what the author is writing about.

Depends on the book. If it's a really good book, I end up reading really fast. If it's an okay book I might take longer.

I read quickly whilst savoring every sentance. It's not a concious thing, it just means I read at a fast pace *shrugs* Inevitably, it seems like I read school stuff very slow, to understand what's in it. *shrugs* This doesn't mean I read everything else and don't understand it, just that I take extra care with school stuff.
