My wife just discovered two days back that she was pregnant. Of course we are overjoyed. However, her blood type is O negative. I have heard stories that there would be pregnancy complications for ladies with negative blood types. I checked with the doctor who gave me a whole lot of gibberish and medical jargon but left us only more confused. Therefore, does anyone know what complications my wife might face since she is O negative blood type?
P.S.
I will be keeping a log of the pregnancy till its birth. If you are interested do go to http://fatherhoodjitters.blogspot.com

As long as it is her first pregnancy, there will be no problems, and if you have a negative type blood there will be no problem, The problem happens when a woman has a positive baby. her body builds up antibodies to the baby's positive blood and any subsequent babies who are positive can be damaged by the antibodies or can be totally rejected by the mother's body. I'm O- as well, and even back 35 years ago, they gave me a shot to prevent the antibodies from forming. My 3 kids are all just fine, althoiugh I was considered high risk because of it for my youngest. Congratulations, and have fun with the beautiful baby.

hey thanks for the reply and the congrats. The doc reckons she may not be O- as her whole immediate family is positive. Probably there was an error during the testing of her blood type then. By the way, so the problem if the mother is of a negative blood type is that the baby may be affected if he is positive? But are there any complications that may affect the mother?
