Does your hand sanitizer really kill germs?

According to health official, a 60% minimum alcohol concentration is necessary in order to kill most types of viruses and harmful bacteria. A recent study revealed that not all brands of hand gels, sprays and rubs are up to par with this started. So how can you make sure that your brand is getting the job done? Regular soap and water are still recommended when cleaning up blood, dirt and other fluids, since alcohol doesn't cut through germs very effectively.. Are you using hand sanitizer before you eat?

I only use hand sanitizer when I am out camping. We also have a sample bottle out in the garage. My mom has hand sanitizer in her car.

i'm sure it kills a good many of them, but not all. i wash my hands many times during the day just from housework and whatnot-it probably cuts down on the chance, anyway. counters and things i use lysol on though.

I really don't use hand sanitizers.. They are very much commercialized and I don't trust how effective they are. I still use germicidal soaps and water. I think they are much more trustworthy..

I do agree with you that not all had sanitizer can kill germs. There are those found not to be effective in killing bacteria and although some are good but when you apply most especially if it is not proper, cannot exactly eliminate the germs. Some of this may be present under the fingernails that might not be reach by the sanitizer. So still the old soap and water routine is still considered the best method.

hello cherriemae, I'm never using a hand sanitizer until now, eventhough in my country hand sanitizer allready famous and use pretty often, usually when we are at car when travelling, or bring by women, I'm usually only washing my hand using ordinary soap, I feel more clean if washed it with water, using hand sanitizer makes me feel a little jellying on my hand.

we also use so much of that stuff that researchers are saying that the natural germs on the human body are becoming immune to all these antibacterials as well.

I don't use any hand sanitizer. I just make sure that I wash my hands good before I put some food in my mouth or preparing some food and after the toilet. I teach my daughter the same and ask her to sing a "happy birthday" (doens't have to be outloud) when she washes her hand. That song is long enough to make sure she wash her hand good. Not just a splash.... Under any circumstances that if I can't wash my hands, I'll use fork, knife or spoon to help me. Or when I eat some snack, I'll just let half of the wrapper stay or with napkins so I don't have to mess my hands.

no, i dont think so. its an alternative for washing your hands. we can kill all of the germs that are present in our hands but by washing and using sanitizer we can lessen i think 72%.

I don't use hand sanitizer at all, mainly because I do not want to contribute to the evolution of bacteria (at least not in such an active manner), and I do not feel that my hands are dirty enough to garner really cleansing them of germs. Not to mention that being exposed to multiple types of germs helps boost my immune system - and there are "good germs" on your hands that help keep you from being sick, and hand sanitizer may be killing those off as well. If you want to see if your hand sanitizer meets up, check the label. I'm pretty sure the amount of alchohol should be on there somewhere.

When I was in Nurses trainning we coud not use anything but a regular soap but this is considered the first skill you learn before you do anything else in treating a resident or a patient. You have a regular germiciadal soap and must scrub your hands for at leat two minutes and there is a regular proocedure..just like you were going into surgery..lol...and when you are tested to become a Certified Nurese Aid you must follow the right prodecure or fail the clinical part of the test and have to do the whole thing over again and this takes time and money but these sanitizers do not replace hand washing...its better then nothing but it is not as good as a good germicidal soap and hot water....
