Early on,Estelle Staley sensed there was something different about her only daughter,the youngest of her four children.aside from being quiet and introverted,little Dawn was not much into the things that preoccupied many girls her age,like dolls,toys or skipping rope.that was fine by Estelle.after all,the child was trouble-free and besides,the other kids seemed to gravitate toward her despite her reticence.while Dawn was attending an elementary school near her residence in a north Philadelphia public-housing project,a school coach unexpectedly visited her family.through his words,Estelle realized that her daughter was not simply different.he told her that Dawn could really,really play basketball.

Dawn is a real inspiration on and off the court... On the court she is a real team player, a leader, a scorer...so versatile, you do not know what she will do next..ready to sacrifice her own personal "promotion" for the good of the team..following the coach's orders and helping others to excel..4 gold medals are not that easy to get at the Olympics (or is it 3??)...Also, on the sidelines, she is an inspiring coach, every player wants to play their best for...Off the court, her organizations, charity and benefit efforts are applauded by any community she embraces...I had the honour of meeting her in the 2004 Olympics and chatted with her for a couple of minutes...so down to earth and "reachable" to people..she made quite an impact on me...Best of luck to all her endeavours in the future...and she will keep inspiring me, thats for sure!

she is definitely a stand out and a prized member of her team. it is good to know that she is so down to earth, despite all the successes that she has reaped with all due credits to her name. may she keep on touching the lives of many in the field of her endeavor.

well she is really a different individual. the mother had no inkling that she has an exceptional child until the time came when the coach came to her to relate how good her daughter is with basketball. dawn became such a revelation for her mother then.
