This discussion piques my interest since I hadn't thought of giving my plant a specific name other than what species it is. I talk to my plants sometimes, like, "How are you, alyssum?". I find that their names are pretty as they are and haven't given them any other names, the only other name I gave a plant is "Tommy toes" for tomato..I got that from Beverly Cleary's character Ramona.

My grandmotehr was an avid gardener and I have inherited many of her houseplants. While I have nearly killed a Christmas cactus, the other plants are all thriving. I do rub the dust off of the leaves of the pothos and cactus, and I talk to them, sometimes I even sing. But I do not address them with names. Maybe that's why I am killing the cactus! I am being rude to him, her, it. :-)
