There is a bill before new zealand parliment anti smacking bill that could if it passes create some real monsters.Yes some parents abuse but a smack can let the child know he she is doing wrong .What is your opinon should a government
agency tell you not to correct your child in a non abusive manner

I think a child should only be hit, if they are being violent. Otherwise, I think it's just a cheap shortcut to avoid talking to your child and having them understand your disappointment in their actions.

Yes talking to children is the best way as if you use smacking all the time you will only teach them that if you get the first hit in you will win any discusion.I think to teach parents to use other methods is better than saying no you can not smack a child. there are other ways to get children to behave and they do respond to caring discussion

I vouch for government to pass law that prohibits abuse on children and that includes beating. But smacking is different. I smack my child's hand and even feet once in a while to show them that what they are doing is bad and to let them really feel my displeasure with their actions. However, one should always be aware of one's strenght when doing some smacking. I for one is especially cautious and I don't allow by ex-husband to smack the child because he is much much stronger and he may hurt the child without meaning to.
