My 10 year old son came home with a not-so-good progress report last week. His first like this ever. He's understanding the material, he just isn't giving 100%. He's rushing to get the work done, or doing the least amount of work possible to get it done. He usually gets this way around this time every year....
I have some things I'm going to try, but what do you do to motivate your kids?

I usually build an incentive plan for the kids. It's kind of like a real job sometimes you just get bored and need to be motivated but if you are working towards a goal you tend to do your job better. Set goals that you both can be happy with. With a reward to work towards at the end. It doesn't have to be anything big just something that makes everybody happy.

That also works. When all else fails. I had to do that to my oldest but it was because of his mouth being disrespectful. Everytime he was he lost something. He has made a big change since he loves his stuff.

This is very typical for 10 yr olds~ especially boys. I have been dealing with this issue with my son and he just turned 13. I have tried bribary, punnishment, being more strict, being more leanient. I have just come to the conclusion that he realizes he can skim by so he does only what is needed. He did join the basketball team this year and I told him if his grades werent up he wouldn't play~ and surprise! His grades went up. Basketball is over now, so I will be telling him the same about track.
