My childhood was full of adventures. We would play in the brook and built a play house under the big pines,we hide from boogie men, robbers, badmen, indians, cowboys etc,we went to Granmama's attic dressed in the finery from the old trunks and became rich princesses ready for the ball, change into the maid that would catch the eye of the king and live happily ever after. We would ask ma to make a map and we'd search for the lost treasure. We'd swing from the hayloft with a rope to save ourselves from certain doom a second behind us.The kids today don't seem to make their own adventures as much or do I just not notice?
What adventures did you have ?
Do kids today have any?
Thanks

Sounds like a fantastic childhood! Don't think its the kids to blame that they don't do the same sort of things today, it is us parents who stifle it! We hear stories every day of children being molested , abducted and killed and we cannot rid ourselves of the fear that the worst in our society may end up targetting our own child!

Today, kids are more into video/computer games. Their outdoor activities are almost nill as they prefer to stick to TV or computer. Actually they are much pressurised by the parents/teachers/society to excell in academics. So the zeal to go out n play is vanishing day-by-day. We were more into outdoor games as computers were not much popular/demanded those days. I think the childhoon is loosing day by day due to indifferentness of children/parents for more physical activities.

I think as parent we need to find ways to stimulate their imagination. While watching squirrels in atree ask what they think would be in the trees if you were in Africa.Once you start things rolling they might take over a bit.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for your response

no they don't ray they are too busy with hand held games and computers etc , We lived in the country , my Dad was a miner , near the mine there was a huge concrete slab( a drain probably) with a large metal ring in it , I was convinced if I could only pull this slab up that there would be an aladdin's cave under it , never did manage to lift it lol xxx

when i was a kid there still many things that i can get for free..fruits, vegetables, i have a happy memories of my childhood, me and my friends will swim in a clean river, if its raining we will go out and play under the rain, we will climb trees and pick fresh fruits and eat it right away... But now with the booming of new technologies children willl be found stucked up in front of their pc's playing net games,

My 8 year old has no imagination. He is either watching TV, playing a video game, now OCCASIONALLY reading a little bit, or he is lodged up our butt, pacing the room in circles out of boredom. It's insane.
I couldn't have been bored as a kid if you'd locked me in a tiny carpeted room. I would have plucked two strands of carpet and made them do battle. I would have laid on my back and gotten lost in a daydream. Not these kids.
He's either doing something constructive or destructive. And he doesn't want to do anything constructive. He certainly doesn't imagine things. He goes outside but has nothing to do unless he can drag one of us. Then he runs, skates, whatever, up and down, up and down, and 2 minutes later he's bored and ready to go in again.
It was not uncommon to find me wandering around the neighborhood with a fake toy sword, slashing at invisible ninjas and occasionally being overrun.
When friends played, they added their imaginary worlds onto mine. When kids play today, they sit and act bored together. It's so sad - the world I grew up in was magickal. The world these kids grow up in? Seems as dull as the adult ratrace world...

Yes it is very sad.I do think that reading stimulates the imagination alot.A hammer, naills and a stack of boards is a good start to let their creative juices flow.My kids used to love to build things. They all spent more time out then inside. But they all were avid readers from early ages..Table with a sheet became a log cabin in the wilderness and the stuffed animals became wildlife.I used to make up stories for them and each night I'd start a story then point to one and say "And" they would have to make up the next part of the story.Sometimes it made no sence but it didn't have to.
Good luck with your little ones.
Thanks

Kids are not as adventurous today. They have more to do such as playing video games, internet, and more toys and TV channels. Also, parents are more protective of their children than they used to be.

No, children of today do not expand their imagination like we did when we where young. With evil lurking on every street corner, we keep constant tabs on our children and they are wired to us if ever in trouble. Kids do have adventures, but nothing like we did. My daughter was writing a short story about being held captive on a pirate ship when Pirates of the Carribean came out, but through lifes busy schedules, never completed the story.

I can say that I have a few adventures (although not as exciting as yours), during my childhood. When I was a kid, I like to play with my Barbie dolls, my family computer and the likes. I also participate in street games with children of my age. We use to play hide and seek and other local street games such as “patintero”, “tumbang preso” and the likes. We also go biking around our village with my friends.
I think kids nowadays don’t have that much adventure as we use to have. With all the high tech toys they have, they can just play inside the house and have fun. And also, since the city is getting crowded, they don’t have much space to roam around and play. They are mostly confined in their house where they have no choice but to play with their high tech toys.

We didn't have much to do when I was growing up. I do remember building me a house with all kinds of rooms in it from the leaves that I had raked up. I also used to pile them all up and run and jump in them. I used to build a ramp and I would ride my bike and try to jump the ramp too. I have a 15 year old daughter and she doesn't do many things that are fun and adventurous. She mainly likes to hang out withher friends and go places. she also like to sit in front of the television and flip the remote or play a game. She doesn't use her imagination.

Funny you should ask this, raydene. My officemates and I were just discussing this very same thing over lunch today. When I was growing up we used to go to the rice fields and catch some dragonflies and other insects, or tadpoles from the pond. We would go out and play whatever we could think of. I think children then were more physically active than today. Nowadays, kids have their TV, PC, PSP, Xbox or whatever gadget technology comes up with. They rarely go out of the house to play even a simple game of tag.

My stepkids (12 & 15) don't do any of that stuff. All they imitate is what they see on tv or video games. We can't even get them to go outside and play, or ride a bike, or anything like that. I want so much more for DS. I want him to learn to use his imagination and play when he's old enough to. I think limiting TV is a big factor in that.

I guess they do specially when you log off the computer and dock their gameboys and nintendoes. They do come up with really cute ones too my friend's son came up with one tying up my scarf around his neck and jumping of the bed a la superman! or other time they ( my friend's children )would come up with crazy games with no rules at all they just made up the whole game and the rules too, it is fun watching them and it was all because of a blackout. I think most kids find it easy to settle in front of TV and do not take the pains to go out make friends and play as a group. If we could just get rid of some of the electronic gadgets, the new age kids would have the same amount of fun as we used to have during our childhood years.

each year kids seem to get more and more sedentary. The laze around the house, but then there are still parents that take kids places and encourage them to play outside as well.

Kids today are much different from the kids of past years (20,30,40years). The life of kids today mostly revolve in the computer and tv, not much of outside activity or adventure. That's how my kids are, their world just revolve in school, home with PC and TV.
During my childhood, me and cousins and playmates would play little house playing roles of mom and dad with kids. We also do hide and seek; we climb trees to get some fruits; we go on picnics and outings.
The life and adventures of kids during my time is much different from the kids of today. We can't blame them. It is because of the harsh environment today and bad influence that we tend to keep our kids inside our home.

Thank's a lot to technology, kids nowadays are stucked in their room, in front of the television or in the computer....most of the time forgets to eat, never exercised (most kids now are just overweight due to lack of physical activities).
When I was young, I would always just imagine I'm a princess of a great kingdom...now, kids imagine they are the warriors on those video games and no one knows what will happen next... I just hope my daughter would not end up in jail when she starts sneaking just to play violent video games

I agree that the kids today don't seem to make their own adventures. In my childhood i had many adventures with my friends. We went playing in the woods and went fishing too.Todays kids sit by the television all the time and they don't do anything healthy.
