"We should kill all gays"

I'm an 18 year old girl who attends a public highschool. I have modern day and open views on "issues" that occupy society these days, as I thought most teenagers did growing up in this decade.. One day in class we were having a debate and discussion. Somehow we got into the subject of homosexuals. One of the boys involved in the discussion said the following, "We should gather all gays together in a certain country and bomb them". I guess my naivity got the best of me because I was shocked and surprised that he said something like that, and in public. He didn't care to think that maybe there was a homosexual in the classroom? I think anyone with the courage to openly express themselves and their sexuality to a society that has become so closeminded towards "difference" is incredibly courageous. What do you think about this? Am I alone with this opinion?

I think most people would be at least a little shocked by the hatred this young man expressed. I certainly would be. Sometimes, I think people make declarations like this in order to attract attention to themselves and to seem "dangerous" or "rebellious". Unfortunately, some people actually feel this way and there is little we can do to change it. Some one who feels that strongly and probably feels very self-rightious in their views is not likely to be swayed by the reasoning of others.
I think this is why we have wars... people have extreme views and get so furious with others who don't share them that they feel fighting is the only way to solve things.

yeah. I definitely agree with you. People don't bother to even attempt to be open minded about some opinions and lifestyles. People are free to disagree with anything they want, but to say something so hurtful is unnecessary.
Thanks for the response!:)

I am always shocked and suprised when people think this way, never mind shouting it out to the world.. I think he was just showing his immaturity and looking for attention. It's sad that in this day and age people can't accept other peoples differences. I hope the teacher said something about his opinion and hatred. Not that he is not entitled to his opinion but he should be able to state why he feels this way after making such a disgusting comment. Not being gay I can only imagine how difficult it is to live with such haters all over the place. People need to open their minds and see that everyone is different and has different ideas. Just because they are not like you doesn't make them wrong or bad.
Why can't we all just get along....lol

Seriously! Why can't we..
The teacher just sarcastically commented on how open minded he was being. I guess that was all she really could do.
Thanks for the response:):)

I think the teacher ought to have said something, because as you said what if someone who was gay was in class? I hope his fellow students also took on his homophobic opinion. It's scary what some people like even in our modern world.
