I found out a couple years ago, after I had had my first stroke, that I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had no idea that my blood pressure or cholesterol were high and I guess it contributed a lot to my having a stroke. Are you on a special diet for your blood pressure or cholesterol? What things do you need to avoid? Do you have any really good recipes that are inexpensive to make?

Fortunately these are not things that I have had problems with yet. I did have to go for a diabetes test to make sugar my blood sugar was not high. High blood pressure could be related because of high stress as well as eating the wrong foods. Oatmeal really helps with lowering cholesterol and I make sure I eat at least one bowl a day of that. Fruits and salads are good for a healthy diet. Staying away from greasy foods would be very helpful though I do those things on occasions, just not frequently. Going for walks will help you with relieving stress which would help with the blood pressure. Hope this helps some. I am sure and hope you get more responses from people who have more good information that will help you.

A Cardiac prudent diet is recomended. This means Low fat and Low Sodium. Ask your physician or even local hospital for handouts with regard to this diet they have them available as part of there Health and Wellness programs and it is typically free of charge. Also many doctors i work with recommend South Beach diet (modified to reduce sodium).

I was at my doctors today and forgot to ask. I have some tests scheduled for next week. I'll try to remember to ask for whatever diet recommendations they have. Thanks bunches!

I don't have... It is important to take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. The treatment goal is blood pressure below 140/90 and lower for people with other conditions, such as diabetes and kidney disease. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits is an effective first step in both preventing and controlling high blood pressure. If lifestyle changes alone are not effective in keeping your pressure controlled, it may be necessary to add blood pressure medication
