How much can you tell about people , just from how they look ?

Can you actually judge a book by it's cover ? Sometimes you see someone with a long hook like nose and small teeth that generally remind you of a shark and you think "that guy looks mean !" , or you meet someone with small features , big eyes and a round plump face (like a baby) and you feel they are good people , or you see a guy with a large nose and a hanging lower jaw and you think 'that is a trouble maker' Is there any truth to those impressions ? How often do these first assessments turn out to be accurate ? If they are true , why could that be ?

Just from the looks, it's pretty hard. If it is just a still image, I don't think any real analysis can be made. You need to at least see his actions. :P

When i look at people for the first time i usually get the feel of who they are first by intuition, and secondly their eyes, because an appearance can mean anything, the eyes, usually are the window to someone's soul.
I can see how they are feeling, and sometimes what their thinking in their eyes.
And one thing i absolutely love about someone's eyes, is the way when certain people smile, it moves from their lips to their eyes almost instantly, and you can see the happiness soaring out.
I just love that.
Sorry to get off topic, but i don't think that you can solely tell who a person is by their features, because if you did that with me, you might think that i was the quiet type, and i'm a fireball, you might think i was sweet, and though i can be, i can also be the most firey person you ever met.
So i don't think that that can be the case, i don't think it can be accurate more than one out of every probably 500 people to tell you the truth.
I think the only time their true per say, is when the person wears their heart on their sleeve per say, and truthfully, how many people do you know that show their true side in public?

Their physical appearance doesn't form my opinion but a person who doesn't look me straight in the eyes does.

"There is no art, to read the mind's construction in the face." MacBeth Act 1 Scene iv. But yet always I have to struggle not to make assumptions based on the look of someone. Studies have indicated that cute babies elicit better responses from their mothers, perhaps there is something 'hard-wired' into us to equate beauty with virtue despite the overwhelming evidence against such match

Interesting - I have thought about this several times in my life. As you may know, we have two contradictory sayings - one is "Face is the index of the mind" and the other is "Looks are deceptive"! Go figure! I have learnt to go beyond looks - the words and actions of a human being tell us a lot more about the workings of the mind - but that also implies that we reserve our judgment about people until we get to know them better!
