It has occurred to me that what a dollar means to me might not be the same thing as it means elsewhere. Here in NewYork State USA the the minimum wage is $7.15 per hour so a dollar is about 1/7th of an hour. The price for a gallon of milk ranges from $2.50 to $3.00.
What is it like where you are?

I'm in Indiana, and it's pretty much the same here.
To answer your main question: "What does a dollar $1.00 mean to you?"
A dollar means that I need another 59c to purchase an energy beverage. A dollar means that I need another $2.67 for a pack of smokes. A dollar means I need another $17 to order out and have a tip for the delivery boy. A dollar means that I need another $29 to fill my gas tank for the week.
...need I say more?

A dollar is about 1/10th of the minimum hourly wage here in UK. Hmmm, a gallon of milk is about 0.8 of an Imperial gallon which is about 6.5 pints which would cost about $3.50 for pasteurised milk. UHT milk is cheaper I believe.

Ok a bit cheaper by your reckoning I took the price off the web as I use soya milk and only approximated the exchange rate. I wonder if they have pasteurised milk in US?

Well raydene honey here the minimum wage is £5.40 I think, which is about $10! After a lot of calculations, which I phoned my other half to help with - we think a gallon of milk works out at £2.30 which is about $5 (roughly!) Think you've got a better deal!

Our minimum wage is $5.15 of $5.25 an hour. I make more so I am not really sure what it is.Gas is about $2.39 a gallon. Milk is anywhere from $3.29 to $4.00.The weird thing about the high milk price, I live less than 5 miles from the biggest selling and best tasting milk plant in our corner of the US. Mayfield's Dairy. I don't see why our milk is so high!?

It is about the same here in Indiana. I feel sorry for the people who only make minimum wage. When you stop and thing about it, that is an awful comparison on the minimum wage the government gives us and the cost of things that we have to have or need. How can anyone live on minimum wage. I know it must be very hard for them. I am working at home on the computer and my husband and I have struggled for years trying to make ends meet. He now make decent money and we are starting to buy things that we always wanted. I truly feel for those who have children and they are trying to prvide for them on minimum wage and everything costs outragious.

Austin has one of the highest cost of living in any city in Texas. Minimum wage doesn't cover the cost of living in Austin, where it can do better in other cities & towns around the state. What makes Austin so unaffordable is both the rents (thanks to the tech industries in Austin, the so called Silicon Hills) and the cost of electricity/utilities.

In Australia $1.00 is a little over $1.00. I can't think of anything worthwhile right off hand that costs a dollar or less. Even at the equivalent of dollar stores things like hair ties are $2.50 or so. It's kind of sad. I'd think they got things cheaper having the import countries for most dollar store stuff a lot closer. I'm not well to do at all, but unless it's in my paypal account and adding up towards something A dollar is something I lose between the couch cushions here as things are rather expensive.
