Is stealing just a phase for some children? Can anyone speak from experience? Nothing I seem to do works. Any suggestions?

I'did it when I was little. That was a tail whupping, and I didn't do it again let me tell you. I had to take the item back and apologize. In truth I simply did not undersstand at the time. These days I ahugely honest, probably to my deficent.
I follow the same guidelines with my kids that mom did. Mine have to take it back, apologize, make restitution if item is damaged. We also have a lot of talks about taking things that do not belong to you and consequences, plus how we would like it if someone came into our home and took our stuff without permission. Good Luck

Yeah, I thought a good spanking after talking to him and putting him on punishment would do the trick but he was back at that same night as soon as I fell asleep.

I don't think I would treat it as a phase and just overlook it. Even very small children can be taught to understand that certain things are his and others are not. If they take something that belongs to someone else, I would have them take it back and apologize. Then, if it happened again, I would do the same thing and tell them that they would have to have a time out to help them remember. I would keep doing the time out thing until they finally got it through their little head that we do not take things that belong to other people.

Yeah, thanks. You're right. He's on time out just about daily now. The downside though is any restriction on him is also a restriction on me because he has to be very very closely supervised otherwise it's playtime
