ok this is something that is driving hubby crazy. so lets see what you think. why is somthing that is sent by ship called cargo? but once it gets in a truck it is called shipment?

cargo is the load carried and shipment is to transport. it only differs from one person to another. But for us we call it cargo shpment in both

If you figure it out let me know. The one I have wondered about and I know a gillzion others have also is this... Why do we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway?

you know that is one that we were talking about last night. lol can you tell we have meeting of the mind around here. i told hubby we sound like a bunch of pott heads. lol and we dont even smoke the stuff anymore and havent for 13 years lol.

In early 1400 Ships were the main mode of transportation. Whatever being carried were known as shipment at that time. Shipment is a word that originated like PASSPORT. Earlier days ships were the only mode of international transport. To pass a port that is not from your own country you needed a PASS and PASSPORT came in to picture. Cargo if referred to a large volume of load and is being used for large containers. Who says cargo is not used for trucks ? Lot of Asian countries use both shipment and cargo for load transported by ships. Also cargo for load transported by trucks. It is not a definition but just the usage. You can use either the words, there is no literal rule that you should use cargo only for ships and shipment for trucks or visa versa.
