Can anyone provide a brief into of MAYA?

All which that I know is that we can create realistic looking 3D images in Maya. I would like to know if we could design our own animated 2D or 3D movies in Maya. I have no experience with this software. So, if anyone could help me out with a brief summary of Maya then please respond.
Is it necessary to be able to code to use maya
Is it very difficult to learn Maya (I learnt Adobe premier on my own via book)
Is Maya very resource heavy?
[I have 512MB ram, 40GB hdd, 3.00GHz CPU, Integrated ATI card]

thanks a lot for choosing my response as the best response and sorry for replying so late. you can make videos of real world pictures in any 3d software whether it is 3dsmax or maya. first start learning 3dsmax and find about this software's power, what can it do. i am working for last two years and this is my favorite software. any imagination when comes in my mind , i convert my imagination to creation in 3dsmax.
please start learning and if any help you need from me ,
i am available for the help.

Well, My father bought me a copy of MAX 6.0. Is it nice one? or I should go for MAX 9.0. By the way, your response was worth of being selected as a best response. :) cheers!!

It is good if you learn maya. Maya has more tools for doing things...
But comparatively you will learn 3D max more faster than maya.
If you are new to the 3D world i recommend you 3D max...
else Maya is best option
I am doing a course on Maya...
