Scar formation is a part of the biologic process of wound repair whether it be the skin or other tissues in the body. With the exception of minor lesions, almost all wonds results in some for of scarring and these scars are permanent. Scars are made of fibrous tissue which replaces the normal skin when the dermis has been disrupted. Scar tissue is of lower functional quality compared to your normal skin. When scar formation occurs...the underlying sebaceous (oil) and sweat glands as well as the hair follicles won't grow back. So once a scar is formed..it will forever be a scar and can never completely recover to be normal. But there are ways of improving the appearance of scars. Some say that vitamin E and other skin creams can improve the healing process. A few other procedures are available such as laser resurfacing, surgical scar removal (which is a misnomer), steroid injections, radiotherapy and dermabrasion.
