Surely I'm not the only one whos noticed this, and finding it really annoying? How and why did this start, and don't they realise they're doing it and it sounds stupid?

I do not know where you are from, but that is more than true in america. In america, we say things like "Let me tell you something." or "I just want to say this." That is from monty python but it still holds true. Americans always have something to say. even if what they are saying isnt true. Actually!! LOL. I think it is because everyone wants to be heard and took seriously. Yes, it does get annoying though.

I do not know how often I use this word and I hope that no on e goes and trawls through everything I have previously written to check. I think I would be safe anyway though. The word actually is meant to be used to emphasise something which maybe unknown or a shock to people so I think with us being in a discussions forum then, everyone is trying to be right thinking it will give them more earnings or just for the simple fact that people enjoy being right. I think as well because the chat here can be so informal then people just type what they would say to your face and I think nowadays we are not all blessed with the most perfect spoken language. It is funny though, how when you notice somthing it can constantly grate on your nerves whenevr here it being spoken without reason. I am sure now my eyes will be open to the word actually. We should have a competition to see who can spot the most within an hour. Lol.
