Discussions or Responses???

I have noticed that many myLot users say that they do not post discussions but only respond. I cannot understand this because if we all felt that way there would be no myLot as it is soley based on users giving us something to respond to. I suffer from loss of ideas or brain stagnation but I always take the time to at least try and post something. They may not be earth shattering topics but I do my best. What do you think should we only respond?

Actually, I don't post much...I think some people post more, some people answer more and a lucky few do both.
I've noticed a dearth of discussions on here in the last few days and I have been trying to come up with a few things to post. maybe I'll post something this weekend if I have time.

Hmm you got a point there heather, but again some users just can't start discussions, what I mean is they really don't know how to put forth discussions, in fact they are better at responding. Maybe in such cases it is best to stick to responding only, as we can do with less junk..lol But again some users want to stop posting because they feel their discussions don't get enough responses, my word to them...keep trying, and don't stop. We need to be very patient here to be able to see some results. Not everybody's discussion gets a number of responses.

I start discussions, just not very many. When I start one, it is something that I feel strongly about. I do alot of responding to things that I am really interested in.

I do think that it's our responsibility to respond onto discussions and possible make a discussion of our own. Personally, its been a while since I started to make a discussion I felt like responding will earn me more. And besides, it is really hard to make an original discussion.

Somtimes I get in a slump and don't start a lot of discussions. However if all of us only responded and didn't start anything new there would be no MyLot. I fully agree with you. What gets me is the people that are still around that have been busted cheating and copying discussions from other users and when you look at their profile they have no responses that they've posted. But I've also noticed fewer people are responding to the things they've copied also. Which says alot about the power of this community.

As my grandad always said 'different courses for different horses'!! Everyone has different opinions, abilities and preferences - I can understand where you are coming from but I think there is room for every type on mylot - some of us post all the time and others prefer just responding - it all evens itself out in the end!

I agree with you pal ,I always enjoy doing the discussions as well because I love to read my responses , lately I have found it really hard to think of things too , I can usually manage 1 or 2 but my brain is drying up , I do try , ( hubby says I am really trying lol )

When I first started on myLot about 6 months ago, I started a lot of discussions. There were a lot less members back then. With over 81,000 members now, it's harder and harder to find an "original" topic to post...so lately I've just been responding to discussions that catch my attention and have been started by others.

I often say I do not post many discussions, but I do realize what you are saying. If no one started any discussions, then no discussions would be available to respond to. I try to come up with some good ones, hopefully not all too heavy. Once in awhile I go on a really inspired streak. I try to keep the numbers manageable so that I can read and rate responses, and give best responses.

I spend so much time responding to my friends discussions that I rarely have time to think of good topics to post. On the few occasions that I have come up with an idea, I have done a search only to find out that somebody else has already posted a topic on the subject. Therefore, for the present, I will stick with the responding. I know you have a very valid point but with the amount of new members joining myLot everyday, I think it may take a while before the well runs dry.

Alexandria, I liked your response and have a question for you. How are your earnings? With over 3000 posts and you admitting most of them are responses then are you saying if money is a concern it pays better to respond all of the time. or is it that money is not a concern to you so you do not worry about your earnings at all and just respond to keep the friendshipos going? i have tried to ask this several times but have not gotten a real answer yet. Also.
how do you search a topic to find if it has already been done?
Thanks for the help. I am glad I found this discussion and took the time to read it all.

tess I'm going to but in here. You only get one point whether it is for a discussion or a response, and I find it very difficult to find if a discussion has already been posted as we don't all use the same tags even for similar discussions.

I think all your action whether it is new discussion or response will be rewarded. So no worries. Just keep on working and you will be benifited in either case...no losers here.

I think it's member's prerogative to respond or to start a topic. I personally prefer to respond, always comment on responses I received on my own topics. There are more than 1,000 discussions without response I really don't see why I don't respond to them even if they are not my friends' discussions, even if they are whiners keep asking stupid questions I don't mind responding. I have 8 discussions not answered, and 160 or so resolved. I like answering to my friends' discussions too and there is no regulation in mylot about how many posts to make or how many to respond anyway. Some members are very good starting topics about pets and my other interests so I prefer not to copy and paste their topics just to make them my own although I was going to start the same topics.

I hardly ever start discussions, mainly because I struggle to think of interesting things to start them about and then when I do I discover that someone else has already started a discussion on the same topic. Also sometimes it takes ages responding to friends discussions and others that catch my eye so I don't have time. Then of course there's the frustration factor - where you start what you think is a really good discussion and no-one responds. Then you look around and see that "what colour is your hair?" has hundreds of responses so it's a little demoralising!

I like to responce. I make several discusion but it almost only few people who answered. So, better for me to response people than make mylot full of disscusion without answer. lol

I've been mostly replying rather than starting discussions lately. Mostly due to my being too depressed to come up with anything.. I try to think of a couple every other day. Half the time I think of something, it's already being discussed 12 times...lol Hopefully next week will be better and I can get more creative.

I for one have more responses that started discussions because It's much easier to accomplish. I guess I'm not one of those “good” topic starter. Besides It's really hard to think of a very interesting topic, if ever I come across one I’d use the search tab and search if there have been discussions about that topic and much to my dismay- the topic has already been discussed- so I just get disappointed. However, I still do try to post at least 2-5 discussions or topics in a day. I really envy those people who can actually start more that 10 discussions in a day! Wow--- how do they manage to do that?
I'm very careful in posting or starting topics because I don’t want my discussions to end up in the recycle bin at the end of the month, I appreciate all the responses I get, and if my discussions are deleted, the responses will be deleted to- and that means deducted earnings for me and my loyal responders which is something that I would rather not happen to my friends here at myLot.
I think we should still try to do both- start topics and make responses, after all if there are no longer any new topics, what will we respond at? Have a great day!
