I want to help my kid's grow there own garden. What fruits, veggies and herbs are easy to grow for kids? We live in North carolina were we have all the seasons yeah! My two oldest are excited about starting a garden for them to keep up with. I know it will teach them responsibility and they get the joys of seeing the plants grow.

Awesome idea!! Maybe your kids can enter 4-H to show off their accomplishments or a dish they have made from their gardening efforts.
There are seed packs too that grow some odd things designed to delight kids. Great way to learn about patiences and care.
Another thing that I do is let my youngest make his own plantscapes to go along with his army guys, lego kits, etc, using artificial soil (no dirt required).

I don't think Lowes has the seed packs I am thinking of, at least they didn't when I worked there. What I am thinking of can be found in Gurney's seed catalog (I think) or was it Burpee. Sorry I dont recall but you can find those sites online. There are a variety of things like beans that grow very long, weird looking squash, things like that.

My kids were also excited about gardening. As young as three I would allow them to purchase seeds and plant them in ice cube trays and cover with saran wrap. How exciting to see their baby plants emerge and then plant them in the big garden. I let them pick their favorite veggies and we plant sunflowers and gourds for fun and gourds for crafts.

I do the gardening with my 7 year old grand-daughter and I find she loves to grow strawberries and tomatoes above all else. Well, mainly because she can eat them all!! It's nice to grow sunflowers, tall and short varieties, as they are lovely to look at and all kids seem to enjoy watching them grow.

I think I would start with veggies they like to eat. They're more apt to stay interested waiting for something they know they like than something they don't. And I'd plant some giant sunflowers just for the "wow factor". Kids will be amazed by plants that are taller than even mom & dad and that have flowers bigger than their heads :)

Kids do well with big seeds. You could try peas, corn, and squash seeds. I think all kids love growing pumpkins, as well. Sunflowers are also super easy to grow and another novelty for the little ones.

This is a great idea to get your kids interested in gardening, because it could stay with them their whole life as it has with two of my kids. I have always been a keen gardener, so when my kids were old enough they got interested in growing stuff. Keep it interesting and mot of all, fun! They love to start their own plants off and watch them grow, they get very excited. To keep their interest (they like to see stuff grow fast), so start with quick growing things like bean sprouts, water cress, mung beans, etc. Your nursery will advise you. Then you can go onto vegetables, or sunflowers, etc. It's very therapeutic for everyone involved! Good luck!

I loved having my own garden plot growing up. The best thing to have your kids grow are the foods they enjoy eating. So, if they love carrots have them plant that. If they love flowers, let them plant those they like. A fruit or berry bush might be liked. Most plants are easy to grow, except certain imported plants that are not intended to grow in your area - roses can be finicky too, but some varieties are easy. Ask at your local nursery, they'll have great ideas on heirloom veggies (which tend to taste better) and easy to grow native plants.
