Has anybody heard of JaJah.com? It is a site that uses web-activated telephony to allow you to make cheap or free phone calls anywhere in the world! You register your phone number, and when you want to call someone using their service, they call you first, and then connect you with the person you are calling. If you want to try it out, they give you a 5 minute test run.
Initially, it is cheap phone calls, but all phone calls are free to anyone with a JaJah account! That means when your friends register, you can call them for free, regardless of if they live in the next city, the next country, or the next continent!
The only catch to the system is that they limit your time to a maximum of 1 hour per day of free calling. Once you use this time up, you can then make cheap phone calls for as low as 2 cents per minute. I thought that the site was very cool indeed, and it doesn't use your internet connection. The only internet bandwidth that it uses is to initialize the phone call, and the rest is history! I have a bandwidth limit on my ISP account, so this was the better choice for me as opposed to using Skype or VOIP. It is also good for users that still run dial-up on their computers or have slow connections.
Try it out now! http://www.jajah.com/

I've never heard of it before now, although I'll definitely give it a look-in.
