I haven't used avast but I think AVG free edition is very good which am using since last 2 years.

I feel that Avast is better when compared to other free antivirus available in the market such as AVG, etc. If you still want to try out something for free, you could actually try some free online scanning removing antivirus, like http://housecall.trendmicro.com, panda antivirus, etc.
