What is the best way to go about shopping on ebay?

So ive used ebay a little in my life, about 10 purchases and a few sales, and it doent seem to be like the best thing that ever happened to me, but i will admit it helps to getter a better view of prices. I like to Check out prices on ebay and then go and look for companies on line with similar products and stuff, and usualy i can buy from a company for about the same ammount of money. Do you have any tips for shopping on ebay?

just beware of buying broken items
if you have doubt or the item has to actually function in some way
ask the person about the item, maybe why are you selling it, where did you get it from, does it work, if it doesn't work can I get a refund?
then if they answer ok, buy the item, also look at the rating, if 100% of people dealing with them were happy, just buy it, if its only 50% happy, don't
