http://www.dailygammon.com
It offers ratings, tournaments, etc., and you can play several games at a time, making as little as a move a day or as many as you want. The site is free and it's tailored to serious backgammon players as well as beginners.

This one I don't really recommend for backgammon as much as for games like Go, Amazons, battle ship, scrabble, etc.
http://www.pogo.com
Live play and you have to finish your games in one setting. Not my favorite place to play but you can earn points to enter prize drawings, etc.

Thank you so much for these sites! I have played at pogo and a few of the games I like there but not their backgammon. I will check these other sites out.

I love truemoneygames.com. It's a huge site, with international players, and you can interact with your opponent if you want to. Even though it has "money" in the title, you can play for fake stakes. The graphics are good, and they have tournaments and ratings, too.
