I do not suffer from depression, but I have some friends who do. I have read in a few medical journals where all the vitamin B's can help boost you out of depression. Omega 3 will also help you a lot, it gives your body what you need to stop depression in its tracks. Your diet can be changed to help too. Here is an article that may help. http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/biology/b103/f01/web2/fallon.html

I suffer from depression as well, and meds. never helped me. They made me feel worse. Animals was my answer. They really make me feel better. I really guess it just depends on your hobby. I hear a lot of people say exersise, but I HATE exersise, and it never made me feel better..just made me feel fat knowing it was hard for me to do. I suggest find your hobby, one that really makes you happy, and put your mind and heart into it.

depending on the severity of depression, exercise is a fantastic way of lifting your mood cos it creates endorphins which give you a natural high, cognitive behaviour therapy or talking therapies with people in a similar situation is a fantastic help - not depressing as it might sound! I was sceptical and wary of this but having had serious clinical depression several times and having the opportunity to try this I realise how helpful and fun (honest!) this can be! Try to avoid alchohol and stimulants as they can cause depression ! Above all if nothing helps I would say give the meds a shot after all if you were diabetic you would take the insulin - wouldn't you?

Different people cope up differently with depression. Depression triggered usually by people close to us or situations that are not good, some say its genetic. There are different things you can do to avoid being depressed, try to engage in a new hobby so you can learn new things,go out with your friends and have fun or you can go on a vacation in another place together with your family so you can relax. Try to be with friends who can give you comfort and lift up your spirit when you are down. remember that in order to survive the depression, you will need a support group of your friends and family. dont worry too much, be happy!

I have a book called Herbal Home Remedies from the people of Prevention magazine. This is what they recommend:
St John's Wort (doesn't work for everyone)
Take 300 milligrams in capsule form 3 times a day or 20 to 30 drops of tincture two or three times a day, or drink a cup of tea three times daily.
Or try:
Green Oats: Take 1 teaspoon of tincture in 1 cup of water twice daily
Or:
Siberian Ginseng: Take 15 drops of tincture each day or 400 milligrams in capsule form two or three times daily before meals.
Or:
Ginko: Take 80 milligrams three times a day.

HI,
First, I am sorry to hear that and I hope someone will come up with some good advice to help you out.
Then, I came across a site and I thought it might help you. It is very well done, it gives tons of advice and solutions. They talk about the common stuff like exercise, diet and trying to positive but they also look into social support and talks, the idea of rewarding yourself as a way to make you feel better about you and they also give herbal alternatives.
If you are interested, here is the link : www.nativeremedies.com/articles/treating-depression.html
and best wishes to you...

I was diagnosed with depression, I never took the medication, I got rid of the problem. But now when I am feeling low and get back into my world of "hopelesness" i try to think of something I like to do, or call someone I enjoy talking to, and talk about things that will not relate to your depression. Sounds corny, but these things really work. Because it has been three years and I have not taken one pill that I have been prescribed. (smile) Don't forget to pray either.

I try to stay busy, visit with friends, try to figure out what the issue is for which I am depressed - then work out a solution or if none is available how to deal with the situation. I also believe it is extremely important to talk with someone....can be a friend, counselor, or a person you do not know but who you can trust. Good luck and there is hope for everything, without medication!

yes eskarena i think i can help you with this one
and that is because i did suffer from depression and did manage to solve it or make it better without any medication
i think the first think you should do is decide that you will go out twice a day for an hour each time.
this sport activity and fresh air will help you balance your androphins (and it is the same effect prozac pills have)
second you should find one person that you trust that is going to help you with this process so you can share everything with him and that you would believe his answers and support are the best for you.
third you should check your b-12 vitamin in a simple blood tests
if you do not have enought of that vitamin it does cause a depression and some other problems
i hope i did help here. and if you have any questions you can send me a private messege.

You might try diet and exercise changes. There is a lot of "poison" in our food today, and regular exercise does increase the chemicals needed by our brain, and it lowers stress levels-which is a big factor in depression. Also, make sure you get enough sleep-at least 8 hours nightly. Try more vegetables and fruits, whole grain rice and breads, and less meat. It should make a difference in a matter of weeks. Also, do get a complete physical. I had doctors shoving antidepressants at me; and I actually had hypothyroidism. By the time they finally diagnosed it correctly, I was very ill.

Like you I'm searching for an alternative but not for depression--I have panic disorder with agoraphobia, and at one time in my life I was completely housebound...I am also trying to find alternatives to med for all my joint problems---Ive never been too keen on meds--usually the strongest thing I take is aspirin....I start reading the side effects most meds give and I stay clear away...I suppose that's why you're not too keen on meds either...right? I understand the herb St. John's Wort is supposed to be good though for depression...ever try it?

Maybe perhaps just as well...If I remember..St. John's Wort, even though a "natural" cure has a lot of side-affects.

Hi ESKERINA1
Depression is the result of out thoughts. Only positive thinking can kill depression. it requires 100% discipline to think positively. Try changine ambience if you want to. Take someones help for this. But never allow negativity to creep in.
Regards.

Exercise has been mentioned several times. I like to hop around and dance to music in my living room. It's ridiculous, fun and cheers me up. I also find that I get a bit of a lift from completing something, like sewing something or making something.
Sometimes I like to sit in the sunlight. It's nice, warm, and pleasant. Or I like to do a jigsaw puzzle.

Umm.. well a lot of people say exercise and stuff... and I think its stupid. Because if you have the will to exercise yourself and then you have the will to get rid of depression. When someone is depressed they cant follow or build a routine for themselves.
What is more important it they should have people around them. friends they can share their problems with and it could be family.
Talk to your parents, siblings.. thats what really helps!
rest is bakwaas.

Well I HAVE TO be medicated at this stage in the game but there was a lot of yrs that I didnt medicate and things like St.Johns Wort, yoga, meditation, colour therapy, being creative (writing/drawing/painting etc), quiet time outdoors alone in the grass, tea and nature music (try Dan Gibsons Solitudes collection) etc etc all helped keep it at bay...

I think you should always take not of the environment you find yourself in most of the time and your general diet. You should try and change you environment if you can, this can mean just going for a walk or taking a vacation some where. Excercise has already been mentioned and just general variety in your life. Having something thst is mentally stimulating or challenging to do for at least a short while each day is also beneficial in my experience.
