This might be limited to California only but, "gnarly" was incredibly popular.
Oh, and don't forget, "Like, Oh, My god" -- "Valley Girl."
I believe that is when the use of "Dude" became widespread.

I remeber valley talk in the 80's. I'm from Cali and those words were insane. I also remember the 80's ghetto slang. I used both valley talk ang urban ghetto slang. Those where some gnarly words we used back then.

Thank god, we grew up and learned how to speak again. My parents were seriously considering speech therapy for me to get me to slow down and not say "like, you know" with the head bob (which almost gave me whiplash) after every other word.
