my son with ADHD is very slow in his class. i am considering him to enroll in a SPED school near our place. i thought that SPED school is just for children with autism, down syndorme, deaf and mute. i do not know that it would cater with ADHD children. i suppose having an ADHD is also a special child

There are currently 14 eligibility categories for special education. ADHD can be classified as Other Health Impairment, which is one of the 14 categories. Some children with ADHD just require some modifications and can do just fine in a regular education setting. Others require specially designed instruction, otherwise known as special ed. In that case, an Individual Education Plan would be developed for your child, with academic and/or behavior goals that the school would work on with him. Special education can look very different for different kids. Some might require special education all day. Others might take some special education classes and some general education classes. In some cases, a special ed teacher or aide might help the child in the general education classroom setting. Make sure that you get a good idea of what your son's school program would look like. The school should be willing to consider your input and answer your questions, and you can work together to make sure that your son has a positive and successful school experience.

thank you for your response. you have enlightened me regarding the special needs of my son. my son is having difficulty with his lessons. he's into regular class. both he and his teacher are having hard time dealing each other. i think i have to enroll him in a special class that he may not feel indifferent.

Although my knowledge on special education classes and special children is very limited, I understand that parents and teachers will have to work hand in hand for the betterment of the child. Your inputs here, sappho, has widened my understanding on the matter. My thanks for you.

In the Philippines, children with ADHD can be easily admitted in the special school. The beauty with our special schools is they have grouped their students by category. Your child will be placed along with those kids whose learning difficulties will be just about as your child's. You will find it more beneficial in the long run because, your kid will be grouped with the ones he is at par with. He will develop more friends and this will provide a better social life for him.

i would like to know if you don't mind where are you from the philippines. i am from cebu and i am confuse on where i could have my child get an occupational therapist. you know how expensive it is to get one considering that i am really in a financial crises right now. also my son needs speech therapy.i am considering him to enroll in SPED at public school near our place. but i am hesitant because he might be grouped to those with more complex needs. i mean those with down syndrome or autism. could you enlighten me on these? thanks in advance.

I'm so sorry your little one has this problem! I think before you make the move you may need to get assessments of his abilities done to see what he can do. You may find that a SPED (what is that, special?) school would not suit his needs. You need to look into all the options open to you, such as EBSS, emotional and Behavioural Support offered in school, special target setting IEP, Independant Educational Plan, OP Occupational thereapist, etc before you make a big decision like this, talk to his teacher and the Special Needs person at his school. I would not take my child away from so called normal children who may help him by making him try to keep up without good reason. My son has Autism, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Nocturnal Enureisis and poor sleeping but is managing to stay in "normal" school at the moment.

Some children with adhd can function just fine in a regular school if their teachers are willing to accomodate and modify for this disabilty. Have you talked to your current school? Although most schools that work with Special Education students are equipped for a variety of issues, it is also important to keep your child in the least restrictive environment possible for as long as possible. How old is your child? ADHD is a very individual condition, but in most states can qualify your child for some kind of assistance as a Other Health Impaired classification. More questions, find a local advocacy group, they will help you. Let me know if you have other concerns and I can try to help too ! good Luck !

i haven talked with the teacher and she is not capable to teach those children with behavior problems. she honestly told me that she's having a hard time with my son. that's why i am considering my child to enroll in a special class so as not to let himself lower more his self-esteem.

If your son is on meds and receiving some form of counseling or therapy to help control himself, he should be fine in a regular school setting. But also ask your school what they recommend. I know that my children (2) suffer from ADHD, and both attend a regular school, but are in a program within the school that is designed to deal with children with mental issues. Not every school has this, but most districts have at least one school within the district with this type of classroom setting. ADHD doesn't make your child and more or less special. It makes life a challenge, which can also be a lesson learned that you can pass on to help your own child or other parents. Best of luck to you and your son
